adjusting heat level

Now that our 8 chicks are a week old, do I need to make sure the warmest part of the brooder is 90, instead of 95, or will they just naturally be under the heat lamp less? I don't want to make them dependant on the heat lamp. DO I have to manually wean them from the heat?

Yes - each week, decrease the temperature by 5 degrees. They will adjust to it accordingly.
