Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Pics
Well, my little sussex was back off the nest and lined up with the rest of them for their evening table-scrap/meal worm feeding frenzy. She still puffing up and clucking now and then, so I haven't given up hope. Sometimes a girl has to work her way up to being full broody.

I resisted the siren call of candling today. Tomorrow is Day 5 -- I may have to peek at one or two then.
I wish I could send you a broody. I had one go broody last week, so I gave her eggs. And now two more have decided monkey see monkey do. I'm not giving anyone more eggs. I have nowhere to put the babies, and my roommate may kill me in my sleep.....

I was asking someone the other day about broodies... and they said when their chickens go broody, they stick an ice pack under their butts and let them chill for a bit to break them. Heh.

Broodiness is the most contagious disease!

I have 2 girls in one pen that have been sitting for some time. Their eggs were all scrambled, so I gave them 4 from the incubator on day 14. Hopefully they can make it a week without ruining them.
I have 4 more girls sitting by themselves, 3 sitting together in another pen, and 2 sitting together in 2 pens. 4 chicks already hatched and on the ground with 3 mommas. :barnie

I know..... first time incubating eggs because my rooster is the only bantam in the flock (although his favorite girl is a jersey giant which is besides the point) and I am on day 18 with only one that seems to maybe have a chance. But it may have died because it looks to small and the air sac to big. I will be happy to have a bigger roo in the flock so I can incubate my flocks eggs.

Hi everyone I really enjoyed reading about your incubating stories. My daughter bought me a incubator for Mother Day so I will be looking for some Serama Eggs to try hatching. I am also in Maryland and was thinking about finding someone local or seeing if I could order fertile eggs. My daughter got me the Brinsea Mini II advanced. It holds 7 eggs and is enough for me to enjoy raising a few more chicks. Last year for Mothers Day she gave me a small coop, thats been sitting empty all year long. My son has RR and Orps plus Easter Eggers and Welsummers that I have hand raised since they were a day old. So I guess in her own way she was telling me use my coop for more chickens. Ones I can play with and enjoy. So best of luck to everyone incubating eggs and hope soon I will be joining in.
