I checked out Two Crows' article on quail breeds and their care and now realize why it would probably be best to just keep a pair. Based on my new choice, do you think it is possible to still get unfertilized eggs from the female if there's a male with her? After all, it would be cool if I could get a couple of fresh eggs every once in a while. If possible, could I keep a group of hens as long as they were hatched and raised together?
Hello there and welcome to BYC!
Quail are super fun to keep. I kept them for over a decade and really miss the little birds.
Not every egg is fertile even if the male is mating regularly with the hen. But you can't tell a fertile egg from a non fertile just by looking at it. Many people eat the fertile ones too.
Generally you can keep a group of hens together that were raised as babies, just make sure they are out of sight of males.
Definitely stop by our quail section for lots of help with your birds.
Good luck and enjoy your quail!!!![]()
