It seems we have drifted from the topic here. I have come up with a game plan to help educate my customers to the difference in quality and holistic view of the food system.

Mods, you can lock this thread.

yea... that BMI stuff is definitely bogus.. it doesn't take into account muscle mass and all that.

i was talking about the seriously huge, sloppy people that are out of breath after taking 20 steps.

and as far as "looking at the same fair" or whatever when i was a kid... well i have a pretty decent memory and i am really not that old and i can CERTAINLY tell you that there were FAR less people that were verging on seriously obese.
sure, the word "epidemic" is used because it is a media scare tactic.. i'll give you that. but i know there was a lot more "home cooking" by parents and family meals at home, combined with a lot more outdoor, physical activity as children then there is now. kids are growing up a lot differently now and if you think that has no effect on their health (both short and long term) then i guess you can believe that. i know what i've seen and there are a lot more fat kids now than there were when i was growing up....

redhen - i think we all agree w/ you that it is a choice w/ most... the use of the word epidemic is overly dramatic.. i guess i just used it because it was previously used and i was referencing that. i definitely don't think it's a medical outbreak (as an epidemic would imply).. so my bad on that one.

sorry, just wanted to say that. i second locking the thread.. not trying to have the last word, if anyone wants to continue the convo...new thread or pm. but i think we can all agree to disagree about a lot of the topics on this thread.

I don't watch TV.

Except important stuff like the Dallas Cowboys.

But then, I can see how that can brainwash me.

Cowboys fan. Lowest of the low.

Childhood obesity has tripled since 1980. The overweight kids also tend to be heavier than overweight kids used to be. The kids are not the ones manufacturing the food. The kids are not the ones buying the groceries. They aren't the ones who added MSG (a substance injected into baby mice in labs to induce obesity and diabetes for study) and high fructose corn syrup to almost everything.

It is not an imaginary problem. This generation of children, at least 1/3 of them, have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

It is not the fault of the children that this is happening. They are not the ones in charge.

The causes are multi-faceted. Processed foods, lack of exercise, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. Being kept indoors instead of being allowed to go outside and play, because parents are afraid of something happening to them. That's understandable, but crimes against children have actually dropped in recent years. Kids need to get out and move around, they need to run and jump, and climb and act like kids. They need healthy food.

Food does matter. Whether you care or not, it matters.
