. I hope they turn out to be girls.

Beautiful.. How many? And, you mentioned that Orps mature at 2 years. I have Buff O's, will they lay 3 years? Or? They've been laying for about 6 months now. Thanks for the help!

They are adorable! It was hard for me to not grab a few of TSC's brown egg pullets! But I have 15! And yeah, I've noticed that the Orps are definitely taking longer to get their feathers! They just started getting tail feathers day before yesterday and the EE's have two inch long tails already! It's been really fun watching them grow! What age do Black Orps typically start laying? Are the Orps your favorite, hence your name? :)

They will start laying around the same time as other large fowl chickens. About 6- 8 months. But they do not fill out until they are about 2 years old.

Yes, love English orps!!! Love their size! But since all my trees are cut down I've been having predator problems. I could keep them confined to a cage but the cage I is to small for them. That's why I'm going to Bantams.

But your orps should lay about 6-8 months. Some later an earlier. They will be as big as they are going to grow in about 1 year but it takes them about 2 years to fully fill out. And you would think they would cull them around that time but been told culling orps for meat takes place around 8 months.

Deciding to get rid of our paint silkies to try and get a hold of more partridge birds. I don't have the time to work on both colors right now. We are accepting offers. I will try and upload a picture. The roo is older and show quality the juvie pullets are from Georgia I don't know much about them my husband got them for me. Also have a few 4 day old white silkie chicks. :) located in Parrish Alabama.

Oh good, thank you! Yeah I researched a good bit on which breed I wanted to start with, the ideals being dual purpose birds, lots of eggs and big birds. I found this site and lucked out in finding Wisher and was hatching the Black Orps! They, the Australorp and Delaware were some of my favorites, and when I saw that Wisher had chicks about to hatch,I was all over her, lol! I was going to start with 12 Black Orpingtons but decided to get half EE's, I'm really excited about the brown and pastel eggs! And then Wisher says, well there's only three EE's left, you might as well get them! So of course I did :) I know o have less chance of getting a lot of girls by getting the two breeds, but I didn't want just one kind of bird anyway!

Whoop whoop, I've got new kids

(chicken kids, no human kid, yet)

Just met Cornflake and got his trio of Jersey Giant chicks. They're a tad smaller than my current bunch, but they'll be alright.. they've got plenty of room to get out of the way of the boys, if needed.

Keeping an eye on them, to make sure they find their way under the heat plate, since they were raised with a heat lamp.. so far, so good. They're a little nervous, but that's understandable.. it's a big big world out there! If needed, they can sleep indoors with a heat lamp.

They're the little emu looking ones! My rocks looked like that a week ago.
