ALABAMA!!

No crusty, nothing in crop, beak straight. Think she can do with some electrolytes. Can I give chicks Gatorade?

I'm sure it's not the best for them, but it wont kill her.. probably better than nothing. If you gotta get it from the store, try and get the clear stuff... or a bottle of clear Pedialyte.

Pedialyte is probably better. Going to the store now. I hope she hold on. I thought she died a few minutes ago. Went over to the brooder and she was on her back not moving. Picked her up. She chirped a couple of time so I put her down and she is just standing there looking miserable. :(

I'm looking for laying hens of any type in the tuscaloosa, fayette, jasper, birmingham area. I have two marans but they are not laying everyday and then i'm only getting one egg. I will be glad to come pick up today or tomorrow. Please let me know if anyone has any for sale. Thanks yall.

wisher 1000 comes very highly recommended and is in your area. I wish (there i go wishing) i lived closer to her. She usually checks in everyday.

Help a newbie out.
Got 6 day old chicks on Monday. All has been fine up to now. This morning I go check and one of the babies is listless. Other kids running around like crazy, ecstatic over scrambled eggs. She's just barely standing
I've removed her, given her water and some feed. Anything else I should do?

One of my cochin bantam I got on Thur still doesn't look too good. I thought it look a little bit better yesterday but today it's back to what it look like Thursday. :( It is not eating or drinking a lot and it spends more of the time sleeping. The Mille Fleur cochin I got the same time was the same size as the other but now it's now noticeably bigger and a lot more active.

I've been leaving it alone but I'm afraid it failing to thrive. Is there anything I can do about it?

If you dissolve plain white sugar in water, 1tsp for a quart, and make sure they get a drop or two if they won't drink on their own, it may buy you some time. I rarely invest more time and effort into these chicks because they end up requiring more time and trouble in the future. The med in medicated chick starter will take care of it if it is cocci. If you don't use medicated chick starter.......well.......you should, especially in Alabama. I know it is hard, it still is for me after all these years, but sometimes it's best for you and the rest of your flock to let the sick ones go.

Check for crusty butts and their crops (too full? Not full at all?). Straight beak? Cross beak can be a real problem. Keep an eye out for cocci.... Sometimes you do lose one. We have to remember what they go through to even get to the store. Can try a bit of yogurt or probiotic if you have it.... electolytes... warmt and dark.

All good advice, Tom, add soft scrambled eggs, med chick starter, and a clean warm brooder, and there's little else to be done.

Chick doesn't look good. Still alive but doesn't move anymore. I don't think it will make it. I have made it comfortable and I think that's all I can do for it.

Np wisher. We are planning to make that road trip sometime around may 15. I have brahmas now. I want that rainbow egg basket. Some dark chocolate colored, blue, pink, olive. Whatever u got lol

I don't do medicated starter.. but that's me. I don't do medicated anything, really. I feel that building a strong immune system is better than preventative medication. Never had cocci (atleast that I am aware of) and never lost a chicken *knock on wood* One day perhaps I will change my tune.. we'll see. I'm the kind of momma that lets her kids eat sand and sticks.

I eat my steak rare and my eggs over easy.

To each their own ofcourse.. gotta go with whatever lines up with your personal approach.

I tend to let nature take it's course. The strong live, the weak die, don't interfere -too- much.. unless it was an accident (like an animal attack. I do treat those... not their fault they're so darn delicious looking). That said, electrolytes, scrambled eggs, probiotics.. all good stuff to try. You're not going to end up with a overly dependent chicken from giving them an energy boost. I wouldn't try for more than a day or two though... if there's no improvement at that point, it's just not meant to be. Syringe feeding for life is madness (although some folks do it... )
