ALABAMA!!

If it is the only one that is not well, then it is nothing you did. Let it go, don't stress or mourn. Keep a close eye on your healthy ones, if any more show signs of weakness, catching it earlier may help it survive and will tell you more what the cause is. Do they have a brooder light close to the floor so they can get warm enough?

I don't do medicated starter.. but that's me. I don't do medicated anything, really. I feel that building a strong immune system is better than preventative medication. Never had cocci (atleast that I am aware of) and never lost a chicken *knock on wood* One day perhaps I will change my tune.. we'll see. I'm the kind of momma that lets her kids eat sand and sticks.

I eat my steak rare and my eggs over easy.

To each their own ofcourse.. gotta go with whatever lines up with your personal approach.

I tend to let nature take it's course. The strong live, the weak die, don't interfere -too- much.. unless it was an accident (like an animal attack. I do treat those... not their fault they're so darn delicious looking). That said, electrolytes, scrambled eggs, probiotics.. all good stuff to try. You're not going to end up with a overly dependent chicken from giving them an energy boost. I wouldn't try for more than a day or two though... if there's no improvement at that point, it's just not meant to be. Syringe feeding for life is madness (although some folks do it... )

I agree on the kids and food, but in the south, it is not a matter of "if," but "when" you have to deal with cocci. I don't give it to the adults, they have strong enough immune systems to deal with it, chicks, not so much. If I weren't feeding medicated starter, I would at least keep a supply of Amprolium on hand. If you have to order it, your chicks will be dead before it comes in.

I was reading earlier about some hatchery chicks now being vaccinated against cocchi. It said to not feed those chicks medicated starter. I think its on the byc homepage by pic of the week and coop of the week.

Chick doesn't look good. Still alive but doesn't move anymore. I don't think it will make it. I have made it comfortable and I think that's all I can do for it.

Lost the chick.

That was really hard to sit by and watch it die.

Felt very helpless and it really sucks but I understand it happens sometimes.

I'm sorry, Orps.

It's one of the sad inevitability's that chicken keeping brings. Find your smile in the other chicks, they will cheer you up. I have some lovely Black Orpington chicks that might take your mind off it...........
