You so crazy!

Happy Chooks posted a pic of her Barnevelders on the Easter HAL and they look exactly like the chicks I thought were PRs. So I went to feathersite to see what PRs are supposed to look like. Now I know that I only have one PR chick and 3 Barnevelders.

Gotcha. I spent a whooole lot of time figuring out what the heck kind of chicks I had my first year. I got 'sex link' chicks from TSC. That's what they called them, 'sex link'. They were partridge rocks

And yeah, they looked like the feather site pictures.

I've always wanted Barnevelders.. my momma used to live in Barneveld! I've got too many birds though

hope your PR turns out ok. I've found them to be prone to overeating.. they're nothing like my white or my barred rocks. They're fat and bossy

I wanted them for their cool looking barring? Lacing?

And for egg laying.

We ended up eating one, because at 1 1/2 years of age she stopped laying. Got too fat.

Now, had she any redeeming qualities, that wouldn't have been a one way trip to my stomach.. but she was a mean, mean thing to younger birds.

The other one is still laying, moderately mean (she does resource guard a bit), but she is pretty. And fat. And always has that nasty poo butt thing going on. Not gleet, just... too fat and fluffy to keep properly clean.

Raz,
Keep those Barnvelders and pair them up with Buff Orps and try to get you some Jubilee Orps. Those things are SO Amazing looking. There is an old thread on here how they did it. It was about 5-6 years ago tho.
It would take about 7 generations to breed true but if you have a bator and do a bunch of hatching you can do it in about 2 to 3 years. Just keep the nicest looking chicks to keep it going. I started that project back then and got about 3 generations into it before predators wiped me out. Those Barnie Roos have a different sound they make and its not like the regular rooster Er Er Er Er Errr.

Just about every night I have to thin out the crane flies (mosquito hawks) on the back porch and the PR is one of the first ones in line for a bug. But the Barnevelders are quick little suckers.

I might have to make some room for that. I love the way they look.

I have had nothing but good luck with my partridge rock girls. They are pretty good layers, the girls are nice and seem to get along (sometimes even a bit timid). I also have a silver pencil Rock Rooster and he is such the gentlemen. (Ok he is really a wimp but yells like a banshee if anything might consider harming him as he dashes to be preferably behind the big hen).

I got mine from TSC, so they're not particularly purebred SOP kinda birds

Like comparing heritage RIRs and TSC's version of RIRs.

I got mine from McMurray, which I had heard that their Partridge are sometimes mean but out of 4, all of them are good birds. I crossed them with my Silver pencil and have two chicks so I will see if there is any recessive agressiveness (say that three times fast).
