Alaska, are you getting ready for Mt. Redoubt eruption?

Do you think you'll ever come back? I wondered at your screen name, if you had lived here before.
Hehe, I'd be there NOW if it weren't for responsibilities here and now for me. I am caring for my 90 year old father, who is doing very well overall and I'll be here for as long as he needs me.
I never expected anyone else to make that connection!! It isn't the main reason for my screen name, but it occured to me when I picked it! I am now living in Portage County, in Ohio where I was raised. I was born in Parma, Ohio, (named after an Italian city) then at 12 we moved to Mantua, Ohio (named after an Italian city) and my second assignment in the AF was to Rome, NY, (named after an Italian city) and NO!! I'm NOT of Italian heritage, I'm 100% Polish American! LOL. I always thought all those names were funny, and then when I was visiting here at BYC, and saw the folks from AK, I sort of picked PortagGirl as a double sort of thing too. heheh. (for you non-AKers, there's a Portage Glacier just outside of Anchorage, and all the canoe trips I took involved LOTS of portaging too!!!)
I lived in Anchorage, stationed at Elmendorf but got out of town as often as was humanly possible!!! Again for all you non-AKers, the saying goes that if you live in Anchorage you're only 20 minutes from Alaska!!!

Hahaha!!! I knew it! I asked my husband, and he said, "no, she's from Ohio." But something told me you had been here. Not to sound mean, but I hope you aren't coming back for a while... your dad is lucky to have you there.
But I think Alaska is a love/hate sort of thing. Either it gets under your skin and sticks with you for life (like me) or you absolutely hate it. They say that 80% of the people that move here, move back to the lower 48 after their first winter. Now, I KNOW there are people in the lower 48 that endure wayyyyy worse winters than I do, but there's something about this state that makes or breaks a person, makes you feel alive. This volcano thing is just one more challenge. Sharing the road with bears and moose is another...

It's not mean at all and I understand completely... and agree. When I do return, it will be with both anticipation and much sadness because of all the obvious reasons. He's an stubborn and ornery old coot though so I'll be here in Ohio for a while!!

Well, I made to Anchorage and the volcano is still holding on. With my luck it will blow the day before I'm supposed to go home.
As for eagles, we've got it good in Kodiak right now. They always move into town for the winter because that's the big season for the canneries and pickings are good. Unfortunately, if you ever saw an eagle scounging through a fish bin, you wouldn't think much of our national symbol!
The other day DH and I were coming back into town and for fun we decided to count as many (bald eagles) as we could in the trees and on the buildings near the canneries. We counted over 130. There are days when I know I've seen more than there were that day.
You're so right, Tori, about the love it or hate it with Alaska. And sometimes you don't know you love it until you leave it. We saw a lot of that when my dad was in the Air Force. People couldn't wait to get out of Alaska but within five years they were back to stay. I wasn't born in Alaska, but have spent more of my life in this state than anywhere else and it will always be home. Alaskans are a family - whether you know each other or not. And we're proud of the struggle it takes to live here. It binds us all.

Restlessness at Redoubt Volcano continues. Seismic activity remains elevated and is well above background levels.
A vapor plume is intermittently visible in the AVO web camera. It appears to rise no higher than the volcano's summit.
An observation and gas-measurement flight to the volcano is en route now.
AVO continues to monitor potential activity with seismic, satellite and radar data.
The volcano has not erupted. ...
Wow... it actually cleared up a little bit today... I couldn't see anything but the water closest to me today on my drive south.

Redoubt Volcano remains restless. Seismic activity remains elevated and is well above background levels. The volcano has not erupted.
A gas/observation overflight today reported continued changes in the summit glaciers indicative of heating of the summit area. The flight and hut webcam photos showed a small vapor plume at the summit. The web camera is now dark for the long winter night.
Also, apparently some news channel reported that Anchorage could get up to 2 inches of ash if the volcano blew. That was incorrect, it should have been 2mm.

the way they were telling it here was the side of the Mt blew a huge hole ,
I am calling and complaining, not nice to worry folk who know people who live in an active area.
