I have a 1588 also and I use a tem/humidity gauge from Walmart. Cost is about $8. I only added water when the humidity dropped below 40ish and it stayed right around 50 - 55 the rest of the time. I did use the other water ring when I went into lockdown so the humididty went to 65-70. That is what worked for me. My first attempt was 35 eggs and 4 were not fertile and one died 2 days after hatching. All the rest were happy and healthy. I had a blast hatching eggs all summer.
Good luck with your shipped eggs. Where were they shipped from?

Its fun to see how many Ak ers are out there!
I lost over half of my babies yesterday to a respiratory ailment after I changed food. It broke my heart and was my fault for not thinking ahead. My regular feed store was closed when I started to run out. We think there was some mold or spores in that food that got them. Kind of down today.

Thank you. They seem to be pretty lively so I have hope they will not be affected.
It was a bad day. I haven't cried so much for as long as I can remember.

Wow, I am so very sorry this happened. You might try making oatmeal and scrambled eggs for them with yogurt to get you by until you can get to your feed store. Where do you have to go for feed from where you are? Who do you have left?

I am okay now as far as feed goes, but thanks for the idea. I will certainly remember that next time we run low. I am 30 miles from my store but it is not open all week. I don't have this happen but last week things conspired against me and I couldn't get in when I planned to. I didn't think at the time that it would be a problem but I know from horses you have to be careful changing feed, especially when you aren't that familiar with the source.
I lost my Blue Lace Red Wyandottes and most of the BCM's I have a few Araus left too. My fault entirely, but that makes it worse. I have a neighbor with a lot of experience, and we are pretty sure a mold or fungus of some kind caused a respiratory failure. We ruled out a number of possiblities, since my chickens never come in contact with others and neither do I. We are fairly isolated. You live and learn but I hate doing it this way......

I just hope everything stays working this time!

Ban,
I am so sorry you lost the BLR Wyandottes!! You had such high hopes for those. Where can you get some more?

Am I the only one who wonders about your screen name? What does it mean?
