OK, need suggestions!
Pretty much all of our cochins are broody, and also right around the age of molting. One has molted, and is growing back nicely.
All of our other breeds, are no longer laying, or, those that are, are just eating their eggs right away, even though they are getting plenty of calcium, etc.
They are all going on two years old.
My plan is to move all the growing boys over with the old hens, and we will have a butchering day soon.

What I want to do, is have a production layer flock on one side, and then keep my cochin side for brooding, and be happy with the few eggs we do get out of them.
I do have babies that will start laying this fall, but that still leaves us with getting at best, 5 eggs per day through the summer.

I figured you all would have a better idea where I could locate about 10 production layers to buy, that are younger, to tide us over.
Not wanting to ask on CL because we have run into some not so good transactions that way, if you know what I mean

ETA: Dh is running over to Triple D to check out what they have in pullets. I had forgotten that they had older chickens.

So, that said, does anyone think that if I went down to the river and got sand for their sandbox it would bother them?? Do I HAVE to buy it??? And will this suffice for grit?

Nesting boxes...

Ramp to nesting boxes, a few perches, small door to the ramp and outside run, and on the left is where the sandbox is going to be...

Wolfwoman, the river sand can work fine as long as you have plenty of variety in size. Baby pea size on down is good.
Coop looks awesome!

Might want to add a 2x6 for a roost for them though. Its the only way they can keep their feetsies from freezing in the cold up here
