Aimee,
I have some links for incubation stuff if you are interested. The links are at the bottom of my BYC page...there are lesson plans, games, etc.
Carmen
Fairbanks is out of them......
I just set 31 eggs this morning that will have to be hand turned as I couldn't find one, and I didn't want to risk the fertility by waiting any longer.
This is for my 2nd LG incubator......
I will be using the 100 egg Brower as a hatcher from now on.... it has more head room and is much bigger......
Can you set them in the Brower until the others are ready for lockdown and then swap them back to the LG that has the turner? Also, have you called Mill and Feed in Anchorage? They might be worth a try.
I have 2 LG and then the brower
The Brower has no turner either....It is the old Galvanized 100 egg model......
I currently have about 80 eggs in the 2 LG only 1 has the turner......
So for now, I will just elevate a side of the incubator until I can get another turner....Ak Mill & Feed doesn't appear to have any either.

Yeah, this one and I came face to face as he was coming out the door of the coop with my Marans in his claws. Needless to say everyone is locked up tight tonight.
I spent a better part of today digging 2ft. holes with the post hole digger so I could make the run secure. I got 11 holes dug, and 11 posts set in them with concrete. This run will be as secure as I can get it.
That's all you can do but it sounds like it will do the job. I keep my layers closed up at night also, and have the dog out on a chain run during part of the day right by them. He leaves the chickens alone but he might be a deterrent for any other predators. I kind of figure I will lose some but it sure is a bummer when it happens.

I have tarps over 90 % of the runs as I know I have hawks, eagles, owls; I have seen them roosting in the trees looking at the hens and chicks....
even my little pens have visqueen or a tarp as I have not had the extra fencing to enclose the tops....

Aimee, you can kill anything in defense of life and property. Just be prepared to state your case when you fill out the paperwork....However you CAN kill the owl in a DLP situation. You can
even kill Bald eagles, Ravens, Polar bears and anything else that poses a thread to Life and Property....You unfortunately will not be able to rid yourself of this owl. He now knows where there
is a free meal and will continue to return. ADF&G will need to be notified if you do dispatch the animal, then what happens is they come in and pick it up. It is then sent to Colorado where
it is then made into handicrafts by natives. So the animal does not go to waste, it is utilized in ways that wouldn't be available if we didn't have DLP. There are many who believe you'll get into trouble
for killing ravens, eagles and owls in Alaska but it is merely a myth when it comes to accidental death or DLP. I'm speaking from experience and I'd be happy to share my stories with you in private
Now if your out shooting them just to shoot them, yep, then you'll end up with silver bracelets....
Remember the fishing line idea that we have here, it really works! Just old fishing line strung in between the rings of your chain link and it's not as unsightly as tarps or nets....
Deb it got both my BCM hens and was trying to fly out with one of the roos when I ran out there, of course it was dead. So I only have one roo left out of all my BCMs.
