Alder chips for run?(pic included)

I sent my husband to get wood chips for the run, and he came back with a truckful of alder chips. They seem kind of "blocky" (see pic below), but the business advertises them as non splintering and say they would be fine for chicken run ( and even safe for children play areas). Thoughts? How are they at water absorption (we are in the rainy PNW).

Yes, alder wood chips have a good moisture absorption capacity, which helps keep the environment dry and reduces the risk of mold formation. Good choice! 😃
