I just want to tell you that I am so sorry for your loss.

WOW! The first that I have heard of such a thing. Sorry for your loss. Interesting that birds are affected but not mammals - wonder what the impact is on reptiles?

Oh, that's terrible!!!!! Thank you for sharing your experience so others don't go through the same thing. We're scheduled to get our first bunch of chicks in two weeks. I will be extra careful about the bulb for the brooder pen!

The coop is approximately 14x12 and was designed to house 50 birds. It has cross ventilation as well as a screened window Actually a very lovely and fully functioning hen house for the last five years.

I am so sorry.

That is terrible, thank you for sharing. I have been considering getting one of the ceramic bulbs that are used on reptiles for heating... I wonder if any of them may have a teflon coating.

Sourland, after reading the article posted earlier, I think that it does effect mammals, birds are just especially sensitive to it. It has long been known that damaged teflon pans, from overheating, improper scrubbing, or just use and age, are very harmful to your health, and whether or not teflon type coating are actually safe for food use or being heated in the first place is still in question. I use cast iron, it's pretty tried and true!

Unfortunately, the way things work in America is to pass a substance if there is no proof of harm, instead of passing a substance because there is proof of safety.

I was wondering if you purchased these bulbs from the UK and why not just use a regular bulb. From what I am reading about it, these are not used for heating, but what they use to coat the bulb so it doesn't shatter. I would assume, it is not a brooder light. It is always best to read the packaging, I don't think there would be a warning about not to use on chickens if it is not a brooder light, company would assume it is for regular usage. It is best not to use lights in a coop for many different reasons, one being they don't need extra heat and too it could be a fire hazard. Once again sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss of your flock but I am a bit confused by the link. It refers to teflon on cookware what does it have to do with the bulb you were using? If it were in the bulb how did it get out? Could it been something else like cholera or botulism? Or some type of poison? Weird.

I see the part about the heat lamps in the article but have never seen one with teflon on it. Thanks for sharing. Does it look this with silver backing?

This is a horrible story! I'm just floored imagining the tragedy of it.

I can't tell you how very, very sorry I am you had to have this happen to you and your flock of healthy chickens.

Is it possible to take a picture of the bulb and the package and post it here? Is there some law that forbids telling us the brand and company that produces it?

Thanks so much for sharing this with us all.
