ALERT!! FAKE SHELTER/ RESCUER

Pending my butt...these idiots have been at this crap for years! They actually solicited some folks from the reservation in Cherokee for wolf puppies....to adopt out blah blah Yeah right! They were tossed off the boundary.

As usual, the cops will do nothing, they will quiet down for awhile and start back up again. I think they should be put in a cage, dipped in blood and fed to their dogs!

Disgusting individuals.

Most rescue groups do wonderful jobs. There are bad individuals in everything. You just have to make sure you know who you are dealing with but I wouldn't want to see all rescue groups take the wrap for these low lifes.

Guitarists, are you on PBF or BBIF?

Most rescuers are ligitimate and need real help with caring for animals so if you are leary of donating $ donate goods like, food, toys, collars, leads etc. Or how about your time..its free

Some major shelters are shady too (like my local HS) so just do your research before donating, no matter what it is.

So many of these scams are going around people just need to be aware that there are people like this in ANY thing connected with donations.

I am in a Yahoo group and I have my own site www.pitbullsintruth.com and if you go there, under "ways you can help" is a list of sites with information and rescues, etc. The Yahoo group.... http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/StopBSL/ .... (I haven't been there in quite a while) has a list of people that are scammers and dog fighters that frequently try to take people's free pitbulls and other animals for baiting.

Kelly makes a very good point about not grouping all rescue or rehab groups together. I know a licensed rehabber in S. IL who doesn't get one cent of fed or state $, and 99.99% of every nickel she spends on rehabbing or rescueing comes right out of her own pocket. She cares for everything that needs help, be it opossums, raccoons, deer, squirrels, skunks, dogs, cats, owls, chickens, pigeons, etc. etc. etc. She is always in need of items like baby bottles & nipples, pillowcases for calming & emergency transport of the small guys, receiving blankets and reg. baby blankets, and soft stuffed toys for "snugglies" for the young or injured to have a warm cuddle buddy for comfort. The need for cleaning supplies is ever present. She gets calls all the time "will you come get this deer?" or "I found this dog/cat/coon/ etc on the road and thought you could help it". Sometimes the person may give her a couple of dollars for gasoline, more often than not they don't

. She takes care of the critters anyway because she loves and has respect for ALL animals, including the throwaways or the wild animals most folks don't give a second thought. DO make it your business to research and investigate the local HS or rescue group, and when you find someone worthy of your time and resources, DO give/do what you can to make a difference. Don't let some bad groups or individuals keep you from doing what you can.

I gave 20 collars a few leads and some toys to an English Bulldog rescue in SoCal which is very far away from me but they are doing some real good and getting dogs adopted PLUS they aren't afraid to take in the special needs dogs either.
We will be making a donation of supplies to a Doxie rescue in TN soon too.
Its really hard to tell a good APBT rescue sometimes but SpindleTop in TX is really great!!!

It is very hard to tell

For the most part I do not donate money to any charities or groups. I feel it is more worthwhile to help educate and volunteer when possible. If we can educate people, the need for rescues and charities goes down. If you can volunteer then you know firsthand what is being done. When you donate, you just never know

It's especially hard with pitbull rescue. I think education is first and foremost. Educating people about the dogs and dispelling myths and urban legends. More importantly, educating people on how to be responsible dog owners. So many problems, dog attacks, neglect, abuse, over population could be lessened if people were just more educated and willing to learn about dog care. It burns me up when people get dogs but then take no personal responsibility for them. And ALL breeds deserve the same level of care and training. I've seen little dogs bite more often than big dogs..... small dog owners think neurotic behavior in their dogs is "cute"......... so sad.

I heard that Denver co. had a ban on any type of bull dog mix. I feel this is so wrong I have a pitt,Miss Mia, who is a babydoll,My son raised pitts before he was transferred to Peterson AFB but if you bought one from him they did a background check and the buyer had to sign a paper that either my son or DIL could drop in at any time to check on the dogs.If they didn't feel right talking to the people or is references didn't check out they did not get the pups. Now I also have a Great Dane, a poodle mix and a yorkie that are rescues, and i would not trade them for anything, they are our babies.

I know it is hard to tell the difference between legitimate rescues and frauds. One thing you can do and it virtually impossible to fake is to ask to see the 501(c)(3). Not all legitimate rescues have gotten tax exempt status, and that isn't a bad thing in and of itself, however, frauds trying to get money will almost ALWAYS cllaim that your donation is tax deductible. If they say that then they have to have this form. Tax exempt status takes a lot of work to achieve. When I am doing rescue business I always carry a copy of ours with me.

I've seen posts about this group of frauds before, and yes it has appeared on Craigslist, at least in Richmond, VA. I hope they are stopped sooner rather then later, but I am a realist and don't see it happening that way.

This is my opinion ...

In having been bitten in the face by a dog as a child, witnessing my 4-year old son having been attacked by sister's white German Shepherd as we were merely walking by, and still paying on a veterinarian bill from 18 months ago where my neighbor's mixed-breed dog came over and attacked my toy poodle in our yard, I think it's more about the way a dog is trained, cared for, and the environment they're raised in, than the breed. I was raised with a beautiful, loving Collie who I adored. Since he died, my mother has only had large dogs, who we also adore. Now, I'm a proud small dog owner and I would never think it "cute" if my dog behaved neurotically. I won't quote statistics on small dog attacks versus big ones because frankly I think ALL dogs, if given the chance from birth could be wonderful family pets. If you think about it... this isn't true in just the animal world but also in our world, the human world. If children are not taught from birth how to behave, shown that they're loved, and given guidance as they continue to grow, they will not be productive members of society either. They won't know any better because they have not lived better and usually are destined for a life similar to the ones of their parents. And, there's something to say about experience in life. I've always said it's not nature OR nurture, it's nature AND nurture. It isn't just who you're born to, it's where you're born and the environment in which you grow in.

I just got an update yesterday and I'm not at all shocked to report that NOTHING has been done yet. I think it's up to us to get the news out and you're all doing that. Thanks to everyone who is cross-posting this.

Kelly
