I wish them luck but I doubt if anyone will help.

At the Bluebonnet Classic every year we ask for help but no one ever does. We are just 4 old people and tearing down is a tremendous chore. Everybody wants to just show up and go home. I don't blame them, I would too, but if it gets to the point where nobody helps then the shows will end. In fact that is what has basically happened in Texas.
You can count on 1 hand the number of poultry clubs in Texas. 20 years ago there were over 20 clubs, a show on every corner and every weekend. But we all got older and no one wants to help.
We have raised our entry fees to $3 in order to hire laborers to set up and tear down. Next year it will likely be $3.50. We don't try to make money on the shows only to break even.

Is this the same group that put on a show at the Comal fairgrounds last year... late summer or early fall? We went to that one and it was somewhat disappointing seeing how many mixed varieties and mutts were being shown as purebreds, and it didn't seem that big.

oh, that's harsh.

i believe there are two shows that get put on in comal fairgrounds. the fancy feathers show (which was in the early summer last year) and the fairgrounds show (which is late summer).

it was the first year for the fancy feathers show last year so if anyone was expecting fireworks, they would have been disappointed. i can't imagine being able to put together a show like the bbc in your first year. i know kathy had her birds there and she won champion large fowl at the bbc so her stock is excellent. i also know there was a exhibitor there who brought silkies she purchased from hattrick. just seeing a hattrick silkie with my own eyes was awesome for me and worth going to the show. i also believe a little girl brought some nankins which are quite rare. all in all, as a chicken enthusiast, i totally enjoyed the show and the chats i had with the other exhibitors.

i believe the fairgrounds show is for the backyard enthusiasts. more for those that are proud of their chickens no matter what breed or mutt. it's the spirit of showing and most of those birds were probably shown by kids. they have to start somewhere. and not everyone can get nice chickens. so they show what they can cuz they just love chickens. if you crush that spirit, there won't be any shows in the future since those kids are our future.

sorry about that...getting off soapbox.

btw, i will be bringing 2 dozen marans e g g s, a dozen RIR e g g s, 3 doz quail e g g s and a dozen serama e g g s for the silent auction/raffle that they will have. if i haven't sold them by friday, i will be bringing an easter egger that's laying a pinkish/brown e g g, a 2 month old cochin pullet, white silkies (very pet quality, they came out with pink combs), seramas, production white and black sex link pullets, two white muscovy hens, pet quality delaware hen and two RIR hens.

sorry, i guess they're doing an a p r i l f o o l s joke and every time i put in e g g (spelled without the spaces) i get rooster.

First off county fairs are just as you have described, it is only disappointing if you went looking for something else. Was it advertised as a purebred poultry show?

Secondly ltlchicken is right, these are a bunch of kids just starting out and may not have everything just right, yet.
It is hard putting a show on period, especially a late spring show when everyone is in the hatching not showing mode. This will be their first ABA/APA sanctioned show. I will be there and wish them the best.

I was able to build 2 extras to bring. These are 30 inches long x 13 inches front to back x 10 inches deep. they have removable deviders. they can have up to 4 compartments down to one big open box. These will be $40 each. They still have the luovered fronts for controled ventilation.

ltlchicken, What color is the cochin pullet? also, May know someone who is comming that would be interested in the muscovy ducks, what are you asking for them?

I have to agree with ltlchicken. I'm really new to the chicken world, but the 2008 Comal County Fair is what got me into chickens and the competition seemed to be much smaller than what I remember from the 2007 Fair. We saw a black silkie and decided we had to have one of those chickens wearing a poofy hat. 8 chickens (5 breeds) later and my family's hooked. We never would have gone to a large chicken show. I would be intimidated to even be a viewer at a big show. The smaller shows seem like they would be more newbie-friendly.

On another note, can someone give me an idea of how much cash I should bring? I'm hoping to find two silkie hens or pullets (pet quality is fine). What kind of prices should I expect?

Thanks!

the cochin is blue and is pet quality. her tail it too pointy. but nice none the less. i have some better quality ones at the house but aren't as old as her, if you want me to bring them. i still can't quite tell if they're male or female and so i wasn't sure if i should bring them. if you want show quality, you need to grab dan dykes and try and sweet talk him into selling/giving you some of his stock.

the muscovy's are white and have brown/black eyes, not blue (just in case they ask) and i'm asking $20 each since they're female. of course, that's my asking price.

I wish I could come to this show everyone is talking about. A little far for me with school still going. Do other shows go on throughout the year and how do I find out? Looking for ones in Texas. Never been to a poultry show and I would love to see what it's all about!!

i know what you mean about the big shows.

i buy my silkies sometimes from a lady at the conroe trade days. she sells her hens from $15-$20 and they're nice quality. i sell my baby chicks starting at $4. i hope that helps.

Is anyone coming from the Dallas area and headed south this weekend. I am trying to get some EE's from up that way but the Hubby, who is usually very helpful, doesn't want to make that long a trip for some chicks. Anyway, if anyone may be headed from that area towards the Houston area could you send me a quick message and see if you could help me out? Thanks all, Bonny
