Almost pecked to death...can she be saved? UPDATE

She developed the bump when she was about 3 weeks old. We isolated her. They didn't get better or worse, so we put her back in with her "sisters" and they left well enough alone.

We have her cleaned up, ointmented, and in a warm bed in the tub where she will be safe from our cats and dogs.

I mixed up some vitamin water and plan to give it to her in an eye dropper. I don't want her to get deyhdrated.

Thank you all for your advice! She is one of our sweetest girls, so I hate to lose her.

Will she scar badly? Will that be a probem when we re-introduce her? We can't have a house chicken...too many other critters in the house that would gladly eat her for dinner.

Thanks again for all the help. This is a great web site. I don't know what we would do without all of you. I never knew I could enjoy chickens so much. We are hooked on Chicken T.V. at the dinner table. The kids can go crazy, but do NOT get in front of the window faceing the chickens if you know what is good for you. She is sleeping so I will join her so I can go to work in the morning. We will look in on her through the night and post an up date tomarrow.

She made it through the night. This is a pic of her this morning. I can't believe how much better she looks! She is a fighter for sure.

Thanks again for all the help! I'll keep you updated.

Should I pick up some antibiotics just in case? I'm worried about how deep the wounds are on the top of her head.

What type of antibiotics she I give her? I would like to avoid shots, so anything that is water soluble would be my first choice.

When our now in the freezer rooster, scalped out hen and it looked as bad as yours all I used was Blue-kote on it and she healed up so good. as long as you keep her where she can't get dirt or get pecked on she should heal up without any problems, how is the eye looking? that would be my main concern.

The eye looks bad. It is hard to tell if the eyeball is still in the socket. At times I think that it's in there, but other times, I'm not sure. I am very concerned about her eye too. I know Miss Lydia suggested spraying her with vetricyn after a few days. We have some of that on hand. Can I pack the eye socket with triple antibiotic ointment? I just put it around the eye, but not in it because I wasn't sure. I really want her to heal up the best she can! I never knew just how cool chickens are!

because of the eye possibly still being in there and maybe badly injured you might ought to start her on an antibiotic just in case of infection. looking at this med. chart I have they recommend Aureomycin for bacterial infections and Penicillin for blood born infections from cuts and scrapes.

She's made it over 24 hours now. She has very little coordination. I'm not sure if there is a brain injury, or if she is just adjusting to being blind (at least in one eye). The eye is in the socket, but not normal looking.

She is having a hard time eating her regular chicken food. She pecks at it, but doesn't open her mouth. I found some worms for her and put them in the shallow dish of water that is in with her. The movement of the worms attracted her attention and she drank a lot. That made me really happy. She also ate part of the worm. I made her some scrambled eggs and put it on a red dish. She attacked it and ate the entire egg. I'm not as worried about her anymore. I know it is going to be a long journey, but I think we're up to it! At least I know that I'm doing what I can to save her.
