Almost pecked to death...can she be saved? UPDATE

Wow it has only been a few hours and she is lifting her head and starting to scoot around. I gave her water that has some vitamins and electrolytes and have started to mix that water with feed and using the dropper she just eats it up and chirps even louder. Still don't know about her eyes. On doesn't look affected but she doesn't open it either. The other looks pretty beat up but I can't tell if she still has an eye or not... Glad I have 3 more days off to care for her. Feeling hopeful.

Wow this little girl is amazing. Standing up walking a little. Her face looks so much better. Looks like she lost one eye but she talks to me. Non stop Wasn't planning on naming my chickens I just refer to them as the Ladies but this little fighter I will call Ruby. Really feel so lucky to have found this website. The knowledge makes me feel like I have raised chickens for years and not only 1 month!

Just seeing your posts about little Ruby. Rooting for her! With tons of TLC and the right meds and nutrition, and a warm cozy recovery environment, these wondrous beings can show incredible will to live. May she heal and thrive for a nice long happy life Thank you for being so loving with her.

Here she is the amazing Ruby. Eating and drinking. Not sure what her eyesight is but right now it is impaired. She just chirps extra loud and I position her near her food. She walks but not well just yet. Set her by the window for some healing sunshine today. Might get some fresh air with her tomorrow, supervised of course! Me research seems to be validating the leader of this attack. I have 3 barred rock hens. The are such personalities I actually thought I may have some roosters on my hands long since day 1, but apparently that is a common characteristic. I learned the hard way about what happens introducing new birds to the flock. I think when it is time I will separate my ducks and BR (ducks hold there own ,they are same age but much bigger) and keep my little redheads (2are same age as the BR and ducks which is 4 weeks older than the 3 babies) together so they can form an alliance. I am open to suggestions. Thx in advance

Well I am almost certain miss Ruby is on her way to full recovery. She now chirps so loud it is hard to ignore. Does she need food or water, no she has those and gets to them just fine. She wants attention. The best part my husband gets a towel picks her up and she just sits on his belly while he watches TV. If I could have snuck a pic I would have.. Oh and her eye I thought was missing is starting to be seen. Hopefully it still works but I may never know.

She wants attention. The best part my husband gets a towel picks her up and she just sits on his belly while he watches TV. If I could have snuck a pic I would have.

Today we had a little adventure. We went to the chick cage and hung out with the other chicks. For the most part the other chicks didn't mind her. She was able to go up and eat right next to them. She is definitely the littlest which is probably why she got targeted. The other chicks did get a little nosey when he came to her healing wound but the were not agressive like the BR were. So for now she stays inside to continue healing and we will have play dates withy the others until she can join them.

Ruby is doing well. I thought a bath to freshen her up since she doesn't have open wounds would be good. But right afterward she seemed really sick. I think it was because she was cold. So I covered her with a towel and put her in the warm sunshine. In no time she was back to normal. Too scary no more baths for ruby. Just food water and love. Though her wounds cleared up quickly seems like overall it is taking forever.... I will be elated when she can integrate with the others then I will feel successful!

Yes, no baths. Messes with a compromised bird's body temperature way too much. So glad she's on the road to recovery. Cozy warmth at all times, and great food and fresh water and meds as needed and you've got it covered

. She may have infection from wounds that you can't see, if she is under the weather despite appearance of healing. Something to watch. Possible she'll need oral antibiotic..... See what you think from her behavior... How old is she now? JJ

She still fits in the palm of my hand. We got her a week ago. Maybe 2-3 weeks old... She is doing better. Her one eye is kind of crusted over so I am going to take some warm water on rag or q-tip to softened it so she can open it again. She is up walking around eating pooping and talking to me constantly. She has ideas to hop out of her box but does have the coordination yet.
