Alternate Way to Assess Life?

I had a brooder malfunction where the temperature sensor slipped underneath my egg turner and when I woke up, the temp on top of the eggs was 102-103.

No idea how long they were like that, and one part of the brooder was only 100.9. But, I’d like to get a sense of whether any of them are still alive. They are at about day 10 of incubation.

I’ve never managed to candle my quail eggs. But is there a way I could listen to their hearts or something?? Anyone?

I guess I should leave them in there, but...I’d like to know.

I find that the default phone flashlight on my iPhone works well enough to candle quail eggs, even highly pigmented ones but not celadon. The flashlight works better for quail than the candling light we got for silkies. At that age though I can understand why the eggs might be hard to look at, they’re decently developed by then. I don’t know much about hearing them until they start peeping which they can start doing pretty early... maybe someone else will know more!

candling quail eggs takes a bit of practice just like any other egg.....myshire farm has added the incubrite candler to their list of supplies for sale, I use a different one with ring for quail eggs, and many peeps use a high lumen flashlight or cell phone for candling. chances are that your eggs are ok, but you should really practice at candling for yourself at some point too. there are many peeps with experience willing to help!

I have a hatch going right now where the temp went out for who knows how long, I caught it in the morning. I have 6 hatched so far and am keeping my hopes down but at least some made it. For candling, I only do it on day 15 but turn off the lights in the room and use my cell phone flashlight. If the egg glows, it didn't develop.

I get the sense that too low temperate is less of an issue than too hot.

Update: my dog found the incubator and ate 30 of the 42 eggs. :/

on the upside, I wasn’t as upset as I would have been if I hadn’t possibly cooked them.
