alternative to heat lamp?

I usually brood in a card board box, with a clamp lamp securely attached using a stick to support (horizonally secured), and my bulb at first is a 60w, then switching to a 40w. If I have used a hotter heat lamped brooding outdoors, I will screw the lamp to a wall of the brooder, and away from any big birds to knock it down. Nothing flimsy. People can take responsibility for things that go wrong and not blame inanimate objects.

I’ve been having success using thick glass bottles filled with hot water and microwavable heating packs (aka old socks filled with dried rice and beans). I wasn’t expecting to need a brooder as I thought my broody hen was gonna do the hard work but things haven’t gone as planned and I now have 4 chicks (and 2 more on the way) in my living room. I built them a cave from a little box and I surround the box with the bottles and heat packs and cover it all in rags. I also have a clamp lamp with just a 40 watt bulb that I turn on for them during the day. In the day they like to nap on top of the cave/under the light and at night they all huddle in the cave. I have to heat up the packs and bottles a few times each day but it works. They are warm and happy. I too live in a small town in canada so going to a farm supply store or using amazon aren’t options for me.
