Am I being paranoid?? Nais questions

I really want to get a business license to sell my fertile and eating eggs and also to take the write offs for the coop, fencing, feed etc. But will that put us on the map for NAIS? I am totally against it and will never register my animals so I am not sure what to do?

And I would love to find out if there is a way to become a distributer for Purina so we can get feed for cost. Has anyone ever heard of a way to do that???

well supposedly everytime I sell a chicken I need to report it,,,,,,Wisc is mandatory sign up,,,,,,,There are just not enough government agents to follow up on enforcement, or so people say,,,,,,,however, I have a friend who says they just show up unanounced at your farm to check up on things,,,,,so what I am saying is I really dont know anything, but, from two years ago to now the trend seems to be not in the small farmers favor, but only time will tell.

Every time we sell at a swap or auction we are supposed to fill out a whole sheet of paper, including all info on the buyer and everybody is testing their birds before sale.

It just depends on what state you are in.
The last I heard, NAIS has been dropped from the farm bill that is being voted on now.
They will still try to implement it, but for now it is a state by state issue.

I think WI is mandatory for premise ID. I'm not sure, but I don't think they have implemented the ID'ing of the animals yet. So you wouldn't have to report any movement yet.
At least this is what information I have at the moment. I try to follow this closely, and sometimes I get conflicting information. (From the same government office...go figure!!)

IMO, yes, it puts you on the map for NAIS. If you've ever paid at the feedstore with a check or credit card or put your name on a list there, it puts you on the map for NAIS as well. There are so many ways for them to know you have chickens anyway, if you know what I'm saying. We are all hoping it will be dropped on the grounds that it is completely unnecessary, unconstitutional and just plain stupid and wasteful.

If you subscribe to any farm animal or hobby farm type magazines your on the list too. We were "required" to reply to a federal survey last year about animals and agriculture on our "farm." They got our name from a subscription list.

There is a NONAIS website that was pretty helpful to me. It also gives you ways to fight it. We are at a "very strongly urged to register" point right now and I will not register my animals either.

Someone at an auction told me they made them fill out a form where they had to put their ID number on ,,,and all the info for the buyer also. I caution everyone on this debate to keep it civil.

The discussion is going to fall into two camps here:

1) government / authority skeptics

2) those whoe recognize the holes in our food system and that there is no mechanism in place for isolating disease outbreaks

I'll come right out and say I fall in the second camp. I experienced and smelled the burning pyres of ruminants in England during the last foot & mouth outbreak. Basically, circles were drawng on maps and the orders were to "kill everything". To me, any system of livestock tracking which would prevent indescriminate culls and lead to selective culling is alright by me.
