I answered an ad for a pullet. (Shown below) she is roughly 2 month old. .

Before I drive an hour to pick it up can you help determine what sex it is?

Looks like a pullet but looks older than 2 months
Hmmm yeah she told me she had one that was 5 weeks old (can she sex the bird at this age?)ā€™ and one approx 2 months old and sent me these pictures. How old do you think it is?! She wants $15 for it.

Great and Do you think I'm safe to buy the 5 week old bird that she says is also female or is that to young to tell gender
Unless it's sex linked, that's an iffy one. Sometimes it's clear, but it's quite young.

My guess is that it is a Plymouth Barred Rock pullet. Not a sex-link but somewhat auto-sexing.

Males have one copy of the barring gene whereas females have two. Thus, females are darker and have closer barring than males.

In the old days, they called the really nicely barred females ā€œringlets.ā€

I decided to just get the older bird and not the 5 week olds. I already have 3 roosters and need to rehome 1 or 2 of them so I don't want to run the risk of them being male.
