I used to catch skip on a base station CB back home before they put up cell towers

Yes, @Jpat, you do need a license to operate a radio. To operate a 2 meter rig you need a technician rating. Everything else, at least a General rating.

No problem, @Jpat. It's easy to do, well except for the Extra/element 4 and it's just plain tough. Look for a local HAM club and check into either classes or do it yourself studies and then test at a local club. Most are eager to help. Books are available on Kindle and it only costs 15 dollars to take the test.

We did it for emergency communications as we live in a cell phone dead zone.
