Amauracanas or EEs...can you tell?

Araucana are rumpless and tufted. Ameraucana are tailed, muffed, and bearded. Two different breeds.
Common misconception that Easter Eggers are 'mongrels' or mixed breeds. The vast majority are not. Hatchery sourced birds simply haven't been bred to meet any breed standard.

I just read on the Americauna Breeders Club website that easter eggers are not a breed. That they are chickens with the blue egg gene. They have a lot of info on this subject there, that was very helpful. It is a confusing issue, indeed!

They aren't a true breed. They are more of a landrace or type. They haven't been heavily crossbred, but they are too varied to ever be their own breed. Hatcheries have been breeding from stock originally imported in the early 1900s. The same stock, by the way, that was used to develop the Ameraucana breed. Prior to the 1970s, there was no Araucana, Ameraucana, Easter Egger distinction. They were ALL called Araucana. When the Araucana and the Ameraucana breeds became recognized, all the birds that met the breed standard for Araucana became Araucana, all the birds that met the standard for Ameraucana became Ameraucana, and all the birds that didn't meet either standard became known as Easter Eggers.

Many, many folks have EE's and like them very much, I wouldn't call them mongrels, as Junebuggena pointed out they are a landrace, so are Icelandic chickens, and I don't believe any one calls them mutts or mongrels because, they originated far away. If you are unhappy with them, you could rehome them and go to a genuine breeder and get my you really wanted.

I'm not sure you've read this complete Thread? I'm happy with them, and would be no matter what they Were! I was just asking if you could tell what they were, so I knew what I had. I've learned a lot about the differences of the 3 different kinds now. As for calling them "mongrels"....it was a joke. That's why I used quotes. Lol. I've seen many folks, even on threads here, that jokingly called them that. I suppose now, after all the info I got, I can't refer to them as that. But, whatever they are
