ameracauna genetics question-wheaton, blue wheaton

OOOOH, I say GO FOR IT! That's perfect to start Fluffy Lavenders -- the male in the trio is unrelated to the females. If you put a Fluffy Blue hen with the Smooth Lavender roo, and a Fluffy Blue roo with the Smooth Lavender hens, you will get two different lines of F1s. Breed the Smooth Black offspring from one pen with the Smooth Black offspring from the other, and if you hatch enough, you'll find Fluffy Lavender(s), and won't be mating siblings together -- they'll just be first-cousins.

Oh, and once you get Fluffy Lavenders, your next project could be Fluffy Lavender Wheatens. They'll be colored just like Porcelains, but in the Wheaten pattern instead of the Mille Fleur pattern. To do this, you have two options:

1) Fluffy Lavender X Smooth Wheaten = 100% Smooth "Leaky" Blacks split to Lavender, Wheaten and Fluffy F1s.

F1 X F1 = 1/64 Fluffy Lavender Wheaten.
For hens, you'll have to look for any normally black feathers in a regular Wheaten that are lavender colored -- might be hard to detect without close inspection, so to be safe, you can use the more obvious Fluffy Lavender Wheaten roos to breed back to a Smooth Wheaten. The offspring from that cross will all be Smooth Wheaten split to Lavender and Fluffy. If you breed the hens from this back to a Fluffy Lavender Wheaten roo, then half of the offspring will be Fluffy Lavender Wheatens. The hens might be easier to tell apart at this stage, since in color, there's only two options -- Wheaten or Lavender Wheaten -- instead of the third option, "Leaky" Wheaten.

2) If you have succeeded in your parallel program of breeding for a Fluffy Wheaten, you can increase your chances of getting Fluffy Lavender Wheatens.
Fluffy Lavender X Fluffy Wheaten = 100% Fluffy "Leaky" Blacks split to Lavender and Wheaten F1s.

F1 X F1 = 1/16 Fluffy Lavender Wheaten.

Oh, and it goes without saying (but I'm still saying it), when you start getting chicks, I demand pics.

AquaEyes,
If you have someone going thru Pennsylvania off I-81 I will give you some Lavender and split hatching eggs. There won't be many but I am not hatching yet. You seem to be interested in Lavenders and this way you will have some to enjoy. Harry

I don't -- and can't -- have chickens. And that situation won't change for a few years. I decided to return to school at a later age (I'm 35) and have a doctorate to complete before I can think about buying a home with the space for poultry. Until then, I live vicariously through the members of BYC.

But I appreciate greatly the gesture. You are well-known for your birds.

Blue (E/E B/bl+) + Wheaten (e^wh/e^wh) = Black (or blue) with Leakage (E/e^wh)
To breed wheatens from Blacks, cross a wheaten and a black, then cross the offspring with another wheaten, to give you 1/2 wheatens from this cross.
To breed Blue wheatens, cross a Splash bird with a wheaten bird, then cross the offspring with another wheaten, giving you 1/4 wheatens, and 1/4 blue wheatens from this cross. Hope this helps.

I just read back to this. Actually, (Splash X Wheaten) X (Splash X Wheaten) would give 1/16 Wheaten, 1/8 Blue Wheaten, and 1/16 Splash Wheaten.

Whenever you breed multiple mutations in an F1 X F1, you multiply the probabilities, not add.

So the F1 X F1 would give 1/4 Wheatens, and of that 1/4, you'll have 1/4 being Splash Wheaten, 1/2 Blue Wheaten, and 1/4 regular Wheaten.

1/4 of 1/4 is 1/16
1/2 of 1/4 is 1/8

Hi Mr Shaffer,
I am honored that you stopped by this thread. Do you have a list I could get on to purchase eggs? I would love to have some of your bloodlines in this project.

REALLY?! Porcelain is my favorite silkie color. I didn't think we'd be able to do anything close with the Ameracauna. Alright, I would imagine that would be 4 or 5 years down the road and by then I may have a larger chicken barn...

ladyfaeden,
Sorry, don't have any eggs right now for sale. I am down to just 6 hens and 3 have not laid an egg since the summer time. The other three are only sporatic and lucky to 4-6 eggs in a week. Thanks though for asking. You can check in later if I am lucky enough to have a few spare eggs. I have not taken any orders this year because don;t know what and if I will have anything available. Harry

AquaEyes- Thank you for your very thorough, clear, easy to follow breeding plan. I am so excited to be doing the Lavenders and you certainly have cleared up some questions I had

My silkied Ameraucauna eggs are hatching on the 15th so I am praying for a blue "fluffy". I will definitely be sticking around here for more advice (if you don't mind), thank you!

Ladyfaeden- Looks like we have similar goals, this is going to be fun!!!! Good luck with the new chicks
