Ameraucana Projects Thread

May I suggest the Austra-Whites! They are White Leghorn and Black Australorp crossed already, would be a great place to start. They lay a cream colored egg.

Looking for some information from experienced breeders -

How difficult is it to breed out the brown egg genetics in chickens?

My current project idea is to breed White Leghorns to an Ameraucana Rooster and continue to cross the next generation back to a pure bred White Leghorn while selecting for the pea comb (and blue egg gene). I was also thinking I would like the breed to have some Black Australorp in it to help with temperament and weight but if it is too difficult to breed the brown egg laying back out after that cross I wouldn't do it. Anyone try it? After 2 crosses back to white leghorns should I be safe/no brown egg laying genes in the mix?

Using white and brown layers should lighten the brown color.I would suggest crossing leghorn and austrolop first. Then ameraucana. You will have a better chance of pea comb and blue eggs.

How about a Rosecomb Leghorn and an Aussie? Then the Ams?

If I remember correctly Rosecomb is dominant over Pea comb which is dominant over single comb. Introducing a breed with either Rose or Pea comb without having the blue egg gene would make the entire project very complex I would imagine. What I will likely do is breed a Ameraucana/Leghorn cross back to an Australorp then breed the resulting Roo back to Pure White Leghorns each year and continue to select for Pea combs/blue eggs. We'll see.

I have a newbie question...
If the blue egg gene is dominant, usually tied to the pea comb, does it have to be the rooster that passes these along? Or will it work in reverse if it is the hen who already has them?
Thank you!

I had lavender silvers show up in my lav cuckoo projects. If I get any to pop out next time you can have them.

Ohh sounds pretty! I am in VT so I may just have to drool! But who knows what will happen! Thank you for the offer! Any pictures???
