Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

All of her AM's are wrong, with the exception of the 3 bantams. I know green legs are incorrect for the breed. I have said this a couple different ways and am only defending the older bantam birds that I am guessing she bought as adults from a real breeder.

I am just seeing pictures like everyone else, but I just can't see any one of those three bantams being DQ'd. Are they perfect? NO, and neither are the examples of the "good" AM's. I can pick apart any bird in any breed, but as I have gotten older I prefer to look for the positive points first.

I have no agenda with this, so I may be one of the few who are seeing those bantams with a clear eye. It is just my opinion, but I will guess that I have judged more of these than most of the posters on this thread have even seen. There are some good AM's around. I have seen excellent birds here in the west, Columbus and WI and I know that they are always contenders in the AOSB class. Our AOSB classes here in the west are the biggest large fowl class in most shows. PBBA show here last year the AOSB class had best and res of show out of 2600 birds. Any bird that wins that class is a contender for best of show.

Walt, I was actually being quite literal. I am not seeing what you are referring to. What 3 bantams? My only "agenda" (as you call it) is clearing this up. If someone has EE's and is blatantly disputing that fact and says they are Ameraucanas, I will have issue, as this seems to be the ONLY misrepresented breed that I've come across, and it just so happens I am passionate about. I didn't realize my eyes were not clear because they pick up on obvious green legs. That translates to mutt bird. There are no bones about it. We aren't talking about imperfections here, we are talking purebreed vs. EE/muttbird. She is interested in showing, she should know what she has to work with will set her back (or her son back) in terms of breeding, as she has inferior stock, that will be extremely difficult and time consuming to even ATTEMPT to breed to standard. We are ALL trying to help her!

If anyone could send me a link to the 3 bantams I am not finding, I would appreciate it. I only see pics of the chicks and cockerels.

Muggs,
She has two different sections on her site with pics of "AM". One is the sale section which has mostly EE cockerels. Under another section of ameraucana bantam she has more pics. The three near the top of the page look like they have the slate legs, alot of the others have the green legs.

The thing that gets me is the fact that they came from a hatchery, and she believes they are show chickens. That is like trying to show a dog that came from Petsmart. I am not saying that you can't get a show quailty bird from a hatchery but it is very unlikely. I wish she had kept an open mind and listened to the people on here that want to help her and her son succed.

Thanks Travis. I didn't double click the tab.

So this is pink right? Wheaten ameraucana 6 weeks old from Denise...

And this is 4 week old blue marans from Peachick...

And I guess here is my inexperienced eye... I see some yellow. Does that not count as the yellow we are talking about? Maybe if I had a real yellow skin chick I would be able to see the difference?

And as a side note... chicken feet look really funny from the bottom don't they?

When I said agenda, I meant no one in particular.....I just meant that as noted, I have not read posts previous to my posts. I am doing someone a favor by posting my thoughts. So.....I didn't know that she was promoting her stock as pure bred. They obviously are not. What I have noticed is that here on BYC it seems as if people (Not anyone here..necessarily) read only what they want to read when someone posts.

You and I had a mis-communication problem only because you didn't see the web page I saw http://emsquaredfarms.weebly.com/ameraucana-bantams.html that is just an accident....no ones fault. The down side to this media is that things said can easily be misinterpreted. I do it myself all the time.

I went back a little to see some other posts, just to get a feel for the culture in this thread and it is a little surprising to see that I am not the only poultry snob around. hahaha

We can't stop people from promoting hybrid chickens as purebred. This was a problem well before chickens became so popular.....again . If a person does not take in the correct info when offered, there is nothing anyone here can do about it. It is frustrating to those of you who are really interested in promoting the breed...but life is short...just give the correct info and move on.

WOW!!! Just wow! The "blue wheaten" cockerel may have slate legs, but his coloring is WRONG. The "blue wheaten" hen has green legs in addition to her color being wrong and type...ugh...just look to her posterior. And the "wheaten" roo has wattles, hardly any beard, and what's with the ticking?

Am I being harsh...in this case...YOU BET! I heard Gordon Ramsey say recently that people learn best when they are criticized harshley, this is SO true.

Don't paint yourself in a corner by being on the side of right and not being open to learning as MUCH as you can about what you have. We all have a passion for this breed and it does nothing for us if we don't learn from one another and take the advice from people who have nothing better than the breed's interest at heart.

Since this is an AM thread I didn't mention the also misundertsood araucana's.

The statement that NO hatchery sells pure stock is not a correct statement. Duane Urch, Holderreads and a few others come to mind. There are not many though, but you just can't make that kind of statement if you are interested in promoting facts.

Maybe say: Hardly any hatcheries sell pure bred stock or 98% sell junk or hatcheries suck.........that would be far more helpful. No one knows what she is going to cross her EE's with and if you read any of the other threads on here everyone is crossing EE's with virtually every breed known to man. I hate that too, but I can't see me being able to do anything about it. I have more important things to worry about. Just inform people of their mistakes and if they don't take that in, move on to a more helpful discussion of the breed. I quite trying to change people 40 years ago and my life is much less complicated now.

What Hatchery is Duane a part of...? Do they have a website? What about Holderreads?

Personally I think considering Duane Urch a hatchery is the same as considering chickhatchery.com a hatchery

They may sell in large masses but they don't breed their birds the same. Holderread too - In fact Holderread offers good quality birds upon request, and they are indeed good quality!
