Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Amy, when do your Lavs usually begin laying? Mine are 23 weeks this weekend...

I don't remember exactly, but they were not slackers like my wheatens. I think that my marans and lav Ams both started at the same time- maybe 6 months old.

Its that time of year- spring pullets are getting ready to lay, the old ladies are exploding....Time to get generous with the black oil sunflower and get some cool weather greens going for them all.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I have a nice big southern window and extra mason jars. I am going to do sprouts for the birds this winter as well as for the people. Wooo I am going to need alot of sprouts!

Hey everyone.

My daughter has her first show on Oct 15th, (4-H) and we could really use some advice on show prep. We will be taking two Ameraucana pullets, one blue and one black, and two feather footed bantams both partridge ( a slike and a cochin). I am her project leader, but I have never shown poultry before. I grew up on a farm and am well versed in daily management of chickens, but I don't know anything about showing birds.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

How noisy are your ameraucana's? I am about to pick up some bantam hatching eggs and am just curious about the noise. I have a group of mandarin ducks and Smew that can get slightly noisy in the morning during breeding season but I am curious how the ameraucanas will compare? I am in the suburbs so I definitely won't be keeping any roosters but I am curious about how much noise the hens make? I have insulated nest boxes set up for them so I am hoping that will contain most of the noise they produce when laying. Thanks for any info.

Mine are pretty quiet, like most chickens.

A couple girls will talk now and then, but most of the sound, like any chickens but gamefowl, is from the "egg song" before or after laying their egg for the day.

Thanks for the info. I have never seen a bantam egg before in person before. I have seen photos but it is tough to get a real idea of the size from pics . Are the eggs large enough to get a decent meal out of? Still trying to decide if I want standards or bantams. I would prefer the bantams for their size, but I am worried the eggs will be too small to really be useful.

2 Bantam eggs equal 1 large egg (approximately)....so you have to have twice the number of chickens or go on a diet....there is good and bad in either option
