Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

sager:)silkies :

so the way to tell if a ameraucana is a true one they have blue legs

Blue (or rather slate) legs is just one of MANY MANY necessary traits including a standard color.

The list has been repeated, and aspects discussed many times on this thread. There is a huge amount of information from the worlds experts here.

***Read this thread***. It is amazing place to learn.

I have been searching this thread for any mention of black mottling or speckles (?) on wheaten, and I found a pic on page 1138 but not much info. I don't know exactly what to call this (other than a DQ :)), but I was hoping someone might have some insight into the genetics behind it. The pattern on this hen emerged after her first molt- before that, it was just a few small spots and smudges on her cape feathers. She has a wonderful temperament and I find the pattern quite pretty, so any ideas for what to cross her with to reinforce this trait? Thought about a Spangled Russian Orloff, or Mille Fleur something, but I believe their feathers have white as well as black tips. Would love to see more pics of any other wheaten Ams with coloring like this:

Go to the Ameraucana Breeders Club site and click on breeder's directory. You will find a list of breeders and just page down looking for those working on mottled. There is contact information for those breeders or you can post on the forum once you are a member for a public discussion of the topic.

You could cross her with a spangled hamburg (or even brabanter though crest may haunt you) for big clear black spots, and then go back to ameraucana to regain type.
A spangled ameraucana would be amazing

She is really pretty, but that is incorrect coloring for a wheaten. It sounds like its one of those anomalies that pop up in other breeds occasionally- like a bunch of white feathers on a black bird.
She almost looks like she's turning into a Buttercup

This is my newest addition. Havent named her yet but shes very sweet and well tempered. Even though shes the biggest of all my chickens(bantams) she avoids confrontation the most. Shes a big softy if you ask me:) I think shes an EE rather than pure Americuana, would I be right with that guess? Thanks

Pretty!
If she were mine I'd go with a Golden Laced Polsih. I'm going (hopefully not to distant future) to try to breed crests into my Easter Eggers. I have seen the Araucana's in the UK and love those small crests on them.

Hello everyone. I have a question regarding genetics of the Blue/Black/Splash coloration and comb. Below is a picture of a young roo I hatched out from eggs I purchased as purebred. Is he perhaps mixed breed or is this normal for splash? I was surprised to see the straw colored feathers on the wing. Additionally, his comb looks larger than some of the other roos'. Is this normal or just a fault or acceptable? Any thoughts or advice appreciated. There are more pics of the Ameraucanas on my page here https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=72289

Thanks for looking and for any help.
