Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Oh, I hope they are ok! You know, you'd think with what we pay to ship live animals that they could be a little more careful not to LOSE them!!!

Well...this batch is recovering quickly, but I did lose one in transit, and one is injured (legs are possibly broken at the knees). They were all very stressed and cold, but they have bounced back really well. After a few hours of heat and making sure they all got enough water, I think the rest will make it.

I hatched some eggs from Mahonri last week that are blue Wheaton x blue wheaton and wheaton x blue wheaton and am anxious to see what the chicks are - I've never seen a splash wheaton. Their feathers are coming in now and most have a little dark with the white, but I do have one chick with pure white feathers coming in. How old do they need to be before sexing them by the color of their feathers?

I also have have some new chicks that are blue ameraucana (hen) x blue wheaton (roo) and splash ameraucana (hen) x blue wheaton (roo) - is it possible to get blue or black ameraucanas from these or are these chicks easter eggers?

There are 3 black chicks and a silver one (splash?) from the blue's eggs (1 black is pictured below with the spotted chick).

There are 3 chicks like this spotted one from the splash hen x blue wheaton roo eggs (all 3 have black spots on their head and back):

Here are a couple of the wheaton/blue wheaton chicks (taken last weekend, right after hatch):

Hi ADC, you will have EEs from that cross. The lighter colored chick with the "chipmunk" type stripes would be those EEs.

God Bless,

If it helps I hatched out one from that mix from a friend's eggs who freeranges her blue and wheaten together. Mine were not laying at the time, and a friend asked me for EEs. I kept them til I could sex them. This is the cockerel. He looked visual blue at hatch and for quite some time til he got a few red feathers on his shoulders. Then the gold hackels kicked in. If you are mixing varieties
they are going to not breed true(even the visuals) and you could get any plumage.

God Bless,

That's what I expected them to be, but got to wondering when all 4 chicks from my blue hen came out black and silver - I thought maybe they would be B/B/S, coming from a blue hen (what do I know). Now, I just have to wait and see what they will look like (tonight, I noticed brown on the blacks' foreheads - definitely not 'black' after all).

Cottage Garden - your roo is pretty - I hope one of mine has blue in it too.

Normally, I would never ask what sex a 5 day old chick is, but I've heard you can sex blue wheatons & wheaton ameraucanas by their feather coloring. Is it too early for that on these chicks?

Most of them have the same color wings so far:
