Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I totally agree w/Royce, especially the part about the hard work by the "best of the best breeders." There will always be room for improvement, even in the best lines, but I think part of the attraction of Ameraucanas is that they are, in so many ways, still a work in progress. You weed through a million EE ads looking for the "real thing," you buy hatching eggs, some are better than others, some don't hatch, and when they do, even from the best stock, you'll cull more than you keep, but when you get it right it's so much sweeter because you didn't just BUY it, you CREATED it! (The last part being what I aspire to, not where I am.

And I'm so glad someone mentioned about the color changing. I thought I was crazy - I'd get an absolutely stunning egg out of the coop, and later I'd look for it in the fridge to show someone and pull out a tray of grey eggs. Has anyone noticed color changing in the incubator, too?

Btw, a bit off topic, but have a quick question. Halo is sending me a cockerel, and neither of us has shipped before. We've done some research on-line, but any suggestions/advice from the been-there-done-that crowd would be greatly appreciated!

Well I am about to "join the club" I have 12 BBS chicks coming from the Smiths after easter. Speaking of keeping records, any suggestions on leg bands for identification?. I think I want to use leg bands not slits or punched holes. What works for those of you keeping track of individual birds?

Oh yes on the egg color, I appreciate the discussion, and feel I have matured because of it..

(Yes, I down right offended one of the "best of the best" breeders by pushing him on the color of his eggs. "good" was just too vague.)

I had a wheaten hen that hatched out w/o face feathers last year and I traded her for another EE. The new owner showed me a pic of her eggs and they were VERY blue.

I also had a blue wheaten roo that came out of my New Years Hatch that was muffless and beardless. I rehomed him to Laree.

Both were just wonderful gentle birds, but obviously I won't be breeding them.

Can't wait to see what I hatch out next month.

not for sure about pullets ? what are they out of ? bloodlines ?
Thanks ,
Shannon

I have 2 pairs for sale in the chicks BST section. The roos are wheaten, not 100% on the females yet.
