Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Sometimes real white ameraucana chicks can go through a brief period of time when their legs look a little green. I would give them a couple weeks and see if it passes.

Where did you get them from??
Don't really want to throw out names as the person seems to be a well known breeder of a number of birds in my area. That said they are at least a well known producer of hatching eggs and have a large number of breeds. I do know some people just collect birds and do not actually breed them. My birds are 9 weeks old now and have been going through a brief period for a while. The legs just seem to get darker green and one has very yellow legs. Two do not have very good muffs and one has none. One does have a grey face but that was not worrying me until the leg color kept getting darker green. I am disappointed as I traded some very nice other breed eggs for these and as she handed them to me she said a few may turn out to have some color but they are still pure Ameraucana birds. I have taken a lot of time caring for these guys and now I just want them gone. I did not want EEs....

Those are EE's. They are not Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, or Splash Wheaten.

If you're in TX, checkout Paul Smith on ABC Breeders List.

God Bless,
Paul Smith has beautiful Ameraucana's with beautiful egg color. I have a few of his stock and my hens are very friendly. I had a rooster from his stock as well that was beautiful, but I just let him go. He was a very sweet boy. Paul Smith will ship out day old chicks too.

In a way I agree. Americaunas are not Ameraucanas.. if you spell it that way you don't have the breed. Same with WheatEn and WheatOn. If you have Wheatons you don't have Ameraucanas... I wouldn't buy anything from people who spell it that way unless I wanted Easter Eggers.
Well get this! I was looking to read a book on hatching chicken eggs on my Kindle Fire and they let you sample the books with a few pages before you buy it.... so I was reading the "sample pages" and they had a picture posted and it said "Ameraucanas chickens" and the photo was a bunch or Easter Eggers! There were other big errors in it too! (Just in those few sample pages!) Needless to say, I didn't purchase that book!

Barrasdupres were created by a Fellow and his daughter from the Carrolton area. We just bought a couple plus a lavender and a black. They do lay turquois eggs. They are white with brown speckles as adults. His were very friendly and social...

Alright, I have a couple questions, since I just got back into breeding and I'm seeing some interesting things.

1; People seem to be breeding for bigger, broader, taller birds every year. When does big get too big? Larger size seems to be very important to breeders, but where is the line? I've heard people speaking down how large the SQ white rocks have gotten and am wondering if Ameraucanas are going in the same direction.

2; What is desired in the realm of tail carriage? I've always bred for proportionately sized, thick, well fanned tails but I've seen a lot of large, long tails. Is having such a large carriage desirable?

I'm just catching up with this stuff, I have no idea if the standard has changed since my '98 version  I'll be working on getting the most recent version soon!

Also, sometime soon I'll be looking out for better quality Buff stock. I like my birds, but my birds are a little on the small size and the color could use an improvement. I'm getting a hold of some new blood this year (mostly Blehm line) but was wondering who has other lines of buff?

I think I read that 20% larger or smaller for the standard is OK. I would go for the larger side of things but that's just me. Probably why I raise Brahmas
