Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The males have 3 rows of dots and a larger comb then the females. The females have a flatter comb and have a smaller single line of dots in the middle. It's easier to see when you have more then one side by side to compare to.

But if I were to guess, yours looks like a female. I have wheatens and blue wheatens in the incubator now that are to hatch this week. I've only hatched black/blue/splash so far.

OHfarmerswife: These are NOT Ameraucana, they are EEs bred from my Ameraucana rooster, but you can see how to sex using the pea comb found on Ameraucanas. A male and a female are in each picture. The black pair is especially easy as you can distinctly see the three "rows" on the male's comb. Also when sexing look at their legs- females have thin dainty legs and males have "tree trunk" thick legs.

Why are splash not a recognized color? Out of 8 I hatched 4 splash and one was a blue splash( my avatar photo). These are a second generation Paul Smith stock. I don't know if they were inbred or bred with another breeder from the ABC list. I kept one splash for myself and was quite surprised I had a second splash since it was a blue chick.

I got some very beautiful birds from this hatch. My blue splash and my white splash are extremely friendly as well as my black rooster that I rehomed last weekend. He was stunning!

I'm keeping mine for egg color and pets. They lay beautiful eggs! I didn't keep the whole bunch since I want wheaten and blue wheaten Ameraucana's as well and I don't have the room for all. I have 16 in the incubator now and 9 of the 16 are the most beautiful eggs I've ever seen.(much like peachicks egg color). I'm praying they hatch!

I have to say that the Ameraucana breed is my absolute favorite. They have wonderful personalities and I'm shocked that my splash/black are very social towards me. I was expecting a more skittish bird.

Not the greatest pic, taken from my iPod touch. The lighting is off.

My second set is in there too, but my bator is on lockdown since these are about to hopefully hatch.

Do all Ameraucana lay this type blue egg? I was thinking they would be super light or pale
No, but my hens from Paul Smith's stock lay beautiful eggs! They are pure blue eggs. Plus my hens are very friendly and not skittish. I hope my wheatens are mostly female. I have no intentions to breed unless its for myself or a friend. I have 2 bloodlines in my incubator. I hope they hatch too. I've had a few hatches go wrong.:(
