Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Mama came out from under porch with six little ones. John Blehm lines.

Alright, I have a couple questions, since I just got back into breeding and I'm seeing some interesting things.

1; People seem to be breeding for bigger, broader, taller birds every year. When does big get too big? Larger size seems to be very important to breeders, but where is the line? I've heard people speaking down how large the SQ white rocks have gotten and am wondering if Ameraucanas are going in the same direction.

2; What is desired in the realm of tail carriage? I've always bred for proportionately sized, thick, well fanned tails but I've seen a lot of large, long tails. Is having such a large carriage desirable?

I'm just catching up with this stuff, I have no idea if the standard has changed since my '98 version

I'll be working on getting the most recent version soon!

Also, sometime soon I'll be looking out for better quality Buff stock. I like my birds, but my birds are a little on the small size and the color could use an improvement. I'm getting a hold of some new blood this year (mostly Blehm line) but was wondering who has other lines of buff?
Use a scale and breed for the correct weight. What bothers me the most is too fluffy in a effort to look large.Extra fluff and you will have to trim vents to get fertility.
This is a pet peeve of mine.Reproduction is a basic requirement and to need help is a red flag that says you went too far.My view only.Tails well you will get a lot of opinions.I know what I like but not going to stir that up.

They also have to be a recognized color
Oh, I agree. But the bird is still interesting for its fun egg color. But they are asking for $12 a chick and they require a 3 chick minimum. I think that is a lot. They charge $18 for their Lavender Ameraucana chicks, too. I called about them because of the egg colors, but way too expensive for me....I don't breed except for fun and I only want fun egg colors.

I've spent hundreds of dollars on Ameraucana hatching eggs just for the egg color and the love of the breed. I'm adding new color ameraucana colored hens. I have blue wheatens in the incubator now. Not all my eggs hatch, so I just might switch to buying day old chicks.

I'm thinking of buying John Blehm's silver Ameraucana's for next spring from cackle hatchery, but I need to decide quick before I run out of time. I'd like to have a couple hens of each color. My husband really has no clue how much money I've put into the Ameraucana breed. I'm making it up by selling fresh eggs for eating. There's a very high demand for them where we live.

Lavender Ameraucan's are considered Easter eggers I believe. I'm not 100% sure, but that's what I thought I've read a few times.

I don't know wheaten chicks, but my guess that's a female.

I've noticed that hatching pure Ameraucana's, you can have a pretty good idea who's male and female by the comb once they reach a few weeks of age, This has been my experience anyways with the Ameraucana's I hatch.

I've had only one hatch before as well. It's very heartbreaking.
