I just have to point out that I hate craigslist posts without pics.

Question:

Why do my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana chicks have little dit dots on their heads and bodies, while my Blue Wheaten Marans never did? - They were just solid lemon-cream yellow colored.

What's the genetic difference that creates this?

pips&peeps :

They shouldn't have black dots or stripes. Sometimes you get a little spot on the head that is darker, but that is not preferred down type for wheaten variety chicks. Below is a photo of a large fowl wheaten chick.

I'm sure someone who is better at genetics can answer.

Yeah, they look like that but not so pale. Hmm. Guess only time will tell the rest. They're sort of a single dot on the head and sometimes two on the body - of a dark brown color.

I only had one fertile egg from my last hatch- but she has a tiny "!" on her head. I don't know if mom or dad passed it on, but they both have great color. Mom is BW and dad is wheaten. I wonder if it indicates what color she will be?

Jean- any chance I would have any splash wheatens in the chicks Holly & I got? I have a couple roos that look like they could possible be SW. Maybe they'll get more blue in a few weeks- but they are gorgeous so far! I'm having a hard time uploading pics as my power is kinda iffy in the camping environment.

I'm SOOO glad I'm not the only one that has done that..recently I thought I had all of my chicks in lockdown that needed to be there..that was until I kept hearing a peeping chick and they were all sleeping...checked those chicks several times and every time they were flat sleeping

a while later went to a bator beside them opened it up and got the begeebers scared out of me when a chick popped up in the middle of the turners(old style) and to think he was even on a middle rack had enough smarts to climb over the other racks and get to the middle out of the way.Hatched and dried in 30% humidity no lockdown no closed bators no fuss no worry.
Jeans babies are doing super...beautiful and growing very well.I know a thread isn't good without pictures but gosh life is a zoo right now.coming soon though-they are still adorable.

What's "LOCKDOWN"? lolololol I learned here at BYC that humidity kills more chicks then lack of it. I had a similar experience with a hatch where I misread an egg that I left in my 18 day cycle bator. Only to have him pop out in 19% humidity. lololol Ever since then I say "What is lockdown?"

No, the cock bird is wheaten.

Cool! I want to keep at least one of the roos- and I don't have a BW yet. I can't believe the differences in the adults I have- personality wise. The SW is very gentle, but the wheaten guy is a bully. I have been letting the wellies out at the same time, but the wheaten roo attacks the bigger (older) wellie every time he crosses into his territory. Poor little SW guy only has 2 girlfriends now, but those 2 roos co-habit pretty peacefully. I'm having so much fun watching them all- it's like a soap opera

This has been an exciting week for me! Took a couple birds to the Uniontown show (my first time "showing" chickens). Had lots of fun, met some really nice people, and my favorite black Ameraucana hen received BV the first show and BV and BB the second show. Not that there were a ton of Ameraucanas there, but it was fun none the less

Then this morning I woke up to 2 pips in my Pips&Peeps eggs!

Three days from now I will have Chicken Stalker babies.

On the 26th my chickies ship from John!

YAY!!!!!
