Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The white on the wings means they have extended black . The black or blue will extend into the white area and replace the white in time .
Can you explain "extended black" to me? I'm new to breeding chickens and my blacks (and probably blues) have white on the wings. I was told not to worry about it. They, too, are from Paul Smith.

Aw darn, thanks for the quick responses! Guess I'll just have to hatch more!

Ditto on the extended black? Is that just a term to describe how the chicks feather out, linked to something, or undesirable for breeding purposes?

Hi, I had a question about splash Am's. Do they start out with black down?
These guys were hatched out of BBS Am eggs, the breeder said they started with Paul Smith lines.
One definitely looks blue, one is all black, but the second black one has white feathers coming in on its wings.
Could I have been lucky enough to get all three colors?!
Here's a picture of two splash chicks, bottom left, blue chicks, top right.

Here's a picture showing all three colors: three black at the bottom and three top, four blue in the middle including a very dark blue on the left, two splash flanking the four blues.

This article explains extended black. Look at "the base-E range" section.
Too much for this brain....at least after I have worked in the garden most of the day. One of my P.Smith chickens did have white or yellow in it's feathers and he did tell me not to worry about it, that it definitely was black. Now, it is black, but with just a touch of discoloration around it's face. I believe it is a pullet. Does this mean I probably should not hatch her eggs?

By the time she lays she will be all black . I can't do the genetic letters from memory but there is more than 1 way to achieve black . The other is based on birchen and they hatch all black . Black is black and the standard does not specify what type of black . You have some very good blood there . No need to worry .

It is normal for extended black or blue for that matter to have white on the face, chest, and wing tips as chicks and to have some white tips in the flight feathers as juveniles.

That does describe one of mine. Don't know about juvenile as they are only 6 weeks old today. The other two blacks were and are totally black. I am very happy to have all of them.

I bought one of these from Myers and paid quite a bit for it but then a couple died and I'm just not sure what this is! Any help would be much appreciated! Also is she a pullet, 11 weeks old. :fl
