Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

@sssharon very glad to hear you did take our comments in the spirit they were meant... :hugs

22wareagle22 does have gorgeous Wheaten's and has made a very kindly offer... I don't have any Wheaten colors at all, but I've got project Lavender's if you ever want any of those as well... :)

Thank you for the compliment on my birds. :) I have project lavenders too! I was hesitant to buy some at first but I gave in! I am SO glad that I did! I have really enjoyed them. I would love to see a pic of yours sometime! I recently added a few white Ameraucana's from Ernie Haire to our flock as well. Chickens are SO addictive!!!!!

I took a pic of some of our lavenders while they were running around playing today.

PS... still dying to see your Araucana pair... :D ;)

I'm new to this breed, so I'm going to be asking some newbie questions. Forgive me for not searching, but this thread is a monster...
How does the lavender gene work? Out of my 17 BBS, there are 2 splash. At 7 weeks old, they are almost a uniform lavender color. Will they molt into a more splash pattern, or is there a wide variety in what is considered splash?
My blacks have a purple sheen. Is this correct?

Lavender is recessive also know as self blue . It is different than the dominant blue in BBS . The 2 should not be crossed as it is really hard to tell what you have . A bird can be both lavender and blue making it nearly impossible to know what you have . Splash should not be a uniform lavender color . Sounds like you may have lavender in your BBS or they may just be very light blues .

I'm hoping they look more splash as they grow, but they really are a beautiful color now. I feel good about these birds, so I want to be breeding correctly. My plan is to keep one of the blue roos so I can throw some splash chicks, but I never intend to breed splashXsplash. As the line progresses, I have room to add pens and possibly breed a pure black line. The blacks are much prettier than I expected

I took these pictures a few weeks ago. I will try and single out the splash for a better close up when I can

Sorry for the picture quality. I'm not a good photographer, and the pics were taken with the phone. The splash are showing as more white than they actually look. They are more of a really, really light gray. The blues are also darker than they appear in the pics. It was overcast that day. Maybe if I can get some pictures in the sun I can get a better representation of the actual color
