Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Anyone planning on going to the Low Country Classic in Blackville, SC, Dec 5th? It is a double show and should have some nice entries.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check that out

I've been dying to see a show, and the State Fair shows got cancelled

Entries don't close until 11/29 - so there's still plenty of time to get your entries in! As of right now, I know we have about 25 large fowl and maybe 10 or so bantam Ameraucanas entered. There may be more, those are just the ones I know about. I've got 10 birds entered, all large fowl. 6 blacks, and 3 blue wheatens, and 1 wheaten. I'll also be offering two of my black cockerels (from Paul Smith) for sale, and a wheaten cockerel - also from Paul Smith. These aren't culls - just extras.

Since this is a District Meet, the Champion Ameraucana wins $50 and a beautiful rosette.

I have two BWs and a splash that will be 6 months 11/29. I have not been expecting anything, especially since my other AM hens are not laying. I have one Splash wheaten that is laying consistently, but she is in a different pen with more sun. I do think my problem is not enough light. I have timers that run from 5AM - 8AM and 5PM until 8PM. But, with the fall and winter sun pattern, it does not shine into their pens very much. I figure I will be waiting until Spring.

How are those girls looking btw?

Any chance one of these could be a hen? The pics aren't great. I'll try tomorrow for better ones. I moved these (4 blacks and 2 blues) guys to the bachelor pad. I was unsure about 2 of the blacks. They are 16 weeks. I had to go ahead and move them because the grow out pen was getting crowded.

Need better pictures of the combs, but the last two pics look like cockerels. In the middle picture the two on the left and in the last pic the one you are holding. At this age you should be able to look for saddle feathers. They are not obvious in pictures but if you start lifting the feathers on the back of the bird in the area in front of the tail you may see some feathers coming out that look pointy instead of rounded. If they have pointy feathers coming out on their backs, you have cockerels. Some Ameraucana males have small pea combs, so it can be hard to tell from that, but since it takes awhile for pullets to lay and those pics show some really pink combs at this age, I'm thinking they may be male. If you could take pics of all the combs or just look for the bird whose comb looks smaller and different, that should help you.

I was just thinking yesterday, that I needed to get pictures. The two hens are beautiful. Hopefully, I can get some this week and post.
This was in answer to MrsBachbach. I seem to be having a little trouble with this new change. Obviously, my browser does not like it. I could not figure out how to edit my previous post.
