Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The neighbor's stupid dog just ate my favorite bantam ameraucana pullet

Sorry to post this again, but can someone please give me some feedback. I am new to this breed and the last thing I want to do is breed inferior birds. maryk117,

I am so sorry to hear about your bird. I hate it when people are irresponsible with their pets!

I personally like fuller beards/muffs but not sure if he is at that awkward stage where he is still filling out? Did you mean Paul Smith? I can't comment on his type as I feel I am not qualified to give a good assessment. Maybe Jean will give her opinion

eta- I think it's hard to assess a young one because they change so much, maybe that's why no one responded

It is much easier to critique an adult bird....at least for me

Thank you, I hope I didn't come off the wrong way. By the way, my name is Krista too! Anyhoo, yes I did mean Paul Smith. Sleep deprivation is a bad thing! I have learned an awful lot already by just lurking on this thread. I am hoping to be getting hatching eggs from Jean in the near future as well. As soon as my incubators have some room anyhow.

I would use the Paul Smith blacks and the birds form Jean before that birds . The splash boy's beard is a bit small who did you get him from that can say volumes about a bird without even looking at them but then again you can also get exception birds occasionally from unexpected sources. I had some blacks and blues from Paul Smith and they were beautiful FLF has them now. Jean also has exceptional birds.

I'm going to be selling some ameraucanas at BYC's Northern California Chicken Swap in Kelseyville (Clear Lake) this Saturday if anyone wants some and lives within driving distance of there. I will have a couple of silver pullets, 1 wheaton pullet and a few blacks (more cockerels but a couple of pullets as well). They are from John Blehm. I went a little overboard with my order worrying that they would be mostly roos (65% were pullets) and then 3 folks backed out of the order (One gal still paid for her order though so we donated them to 4H which felt really good!

) so I have way too many chicks for my tiny city lot! I have a total of 42 birds right now (including my existing flock) and can only keep 25! Help! I want them all but...

So if anybody is local to there and wants a couple of 7 week old ameraucana chicks, come on by!

Thanks to everyone that helped me sex my chicks! The pics you sent really helped!

He looks pretty good so far. I would seperate him to an area with just a few birds so he can fill out and let his feathers grow in. He still has alot of growing and changing to do. The problem with the splash birds is that it takes forever to wait and see if they are going to have any leakage. I had one that I kept from a late summer hatch until about 6-8 weeks ago because he got brassy.

Also try to keep him in a shaded area so he doesn't get sun bleaching which can cause brassiness too.
