Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thank you! You must be able to see past the gawky adolescent phase that everyone else has commented on. Most of them still have bits of down sticking out in spots and their feathers aren't filled in all the way yet and some stick out at wierd angles.

Still I love this stage. It reminds me of my awkward preteen years.

Oops, correction! It now looks like 1 of my silvers is a boy. Tiny comb but his coloring is so much more white and black (very pronounced) that I did some more research on-line. Yep the boys have very pronounced silver/white and black color and the girls have silver/black at hackles but brownish mixed in with these colors on their bodies.

Boy, I think...

HI All! really hoping I can get some experts to weigh in on a couple new chicks. Just hatched this week, adorable little fuzz butts, BUT I am seeing a mossy color (sorry, BCM term, um reddish coloring?) on a few of the birds. The breeder only has BBS and some project split Lav's (none of those made it to lockdown) so I"m confused on where this reddish color is coming from. Actually had a pretty low hatch, out of 29 eggs only 16 made it to lockdown and only 7 of those hatched. These weren't shipped either, I picked them up from her farm.

Not sure if the breeder is on BYC but she is a member of the Amer Breeders club so I was hoping for decent stock but this coloring has been concerned. Out of the 7 I did hatch, no splashes and only one blue. the rest are mostly black in color, except for this red color.

I was a bit surprised by the coloring on some of these chicks but these are some of my first true Amer and I wasn't sure if that was just standard for the breed. Can someone please enlighten me? I am looking to start a flock of just BBS, should I remove these from the group of potential breeders? any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

this one has the most red to it.

and then these two just have it on their head area:

The only time I have seen that color is when it is from my EE's (mixed ameraucana - black x blue wheaten)

I get 1-2 chicks with a buff looking face when I hatch a batch of split lavenders, since they are still in the project stages. But, I must say that I have not seen that kind of coloring on BBS birds. It appears to be red leakage.

OH NO!

I was thinking there might be some wheaton but when I checked that coloring on ABC it looked a LOT lighter than what i'm seeing. Guess these ones will go into my egg laying pen!

pip&peeps - yeah these particular ones are not split Lav's--none of those even developed for me.

anything I can do to breed the red out or should I just exclude these from any breeding?

seems like the more I try to get quality birds, the worse off I am!

My first time doing pics, I hope this works. These are from the Lisa and Gary Cree. At five days old.
