Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Got some questions for Ameracuana people. I have 10 chicks that are 3 weeks old. How can I tell which birds are going to roosters? Do they have thicker legs or is their comb wider? When I had my orpingtons I could see a difference. These bird I can't tell. Do young birds taste good? ( Yes roosters!) I have one chick with a small growth on his head. It looks like a tiny boil. Would it be ok to try to use a needle to pop it?

With ameraucanas you generally have to wait a bit longer to sex them than a single comb breed (ie. Orpingtons, RIRs, New Hampshire Reds, Plymouth Rocks, ect.) and I dont know about the boil

Brody's Broodello :

Just wanted to post some pics of our newest addition Becky. A Blue Wheaten Ameraucana chick that we brought back from Lucasville last weekend. She became quite attached to my son who had to have her with him for the entire 8 hour drive. If he put her down she would scream bloody murder so she road the entire way home like this

I did say slash americana didnt I, oops, I have black and white that are pure but this little guy come from so poor quality birds I got off here a year or so ago, they were supposed to be show quality, but it didnt work out that way, so I threw them in the layer pen, but they are still cute. the wife likes them and wanted a few more so, I bred about six or seven eggs up and put them in to cook, I''l post pics of the blacks and whites later, got to head off to work, no rest for the wicked.

Ok, my birthday hatch has finished. I got 11 splash, blue, and one black baby. I'm ecstatic! Here are some pics. By the way, these are from Jean's birds

Can you tell me the difference between ameracauna and EE's? I understand what an aracauna is and i thought ameracaunas were a cross between an aracauna and an egg layer or dual purpose chicken. If you wouldn't mind ( As I've been considering getting some aracaunas) the benefits or what you like about the ameracaunas. I have 3 of what i thought were ameracaunas, but they are probably EE's.

Yes , they're EE . They have the muffs , beards , and tails like Ameraucana instead of the tufts and rumplessness of the Araucana ; but are not a recognized variety of Ameraucana and Ameraucana are not allowed to have green legs . Still , I love EE's

The Araucana have a fatal gene associated to bilateral tufting , and the rumplessness can cause breeding problems [ plus the oil gland located above the tail is missing ] . For me that puts Ameraucana at an adventage . Ameraucana only come in 8 recognized color varieties , though I suspicion the 9th , lavender , is soon to be recognized .

Congrats on the birthday hatch Kansas! They are completely adoreable!

Sorry to get back to the whole lav discussion- but is it possible to have lavender with barring? I've never had any lavs that weren't already fully feathered until now, and this one little guy (or girl) seems to have very faint stripes on the feathers. I don't know if it will even show up in a photo
