Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well in about 6 short months I will let you know what mine lay! lol You know there is a lot of waiting! You wait for them to hatch. Then you wait to find out the gender. Then you wait for them to lay and then you start all over again! This is not for the I want it now person that can't wait for Christmas!

The giveaway is no ameraucana chick has the chipmunk pattern. Every chick at hatch will look like the representative chick on the color chart. (Linked in the first reply) You will know exactly how it will mature based on color at hatch.
No Ameraucana variety, except silver! But percheron is right, the vast majority of ameraucana chicks will not have a chipmunky down color.

The key is really who you received the birds in question from, as many hatcheries sell exclusively Easter Eggers

Dropping in after a long break, good to be enjoying this breed again soon. I'm happy to see this thread has thrived

LOL! Very true. If you're looking for instant gratification, buy a chocolate cake. :)

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but....don't spread yourself too thin across multiple varieties. Get comfortable with one or two, then slowly add more. :) I worked with just the wheatens/blue wheatens for five years before I added blacks, then added blues this year. My plan was to add black and whites last year, but the whites didn't pan out, so I'm adding blues this year. :) I can also tell you that it takes at least two pens per variety to maintain any kind of genetic diversity, and more is better. :) Not that I don't want to sell you chicks, you understand...:)
Yes, & it will be interesting to see what I end up with & what I keep when their grown out
This is the wheaten cock that I kept from last year. He is in pen#2 over the two Paul Smith hens that I kept from last year. It's too early to tell now whether I will have a keeper blue wheaten cockerel this year or not - I'm hoping I do. :)
He looks real sharp!
I understand! My husband wanted Wheaten/Blue Wheaten! Then The splash where white! :lau
So many to choose from!
I totally agree. I fell into that trap a couple of years ago, and it's overwhelming. I'm shifting my focus now to the AMs and BCM, and still am a pen or two short. There are so many fascinating colors, but I'd rather focus on learning and improving what I have than get overwhelmed with too many flocks
My wheatens are not being cooperative today. :( Here is a picture of the eggs from the black pens, laid so far. The picture of the big basket is from 4-14-14 - so two years ago, off my website. With the exception of a few turkey eggs and some Marans eggs, these are all from my wheaten/blue wheatens. These are both taken outside, in natural light, on my cell phone. A few from my black pens today. This year, I have a couple of hens that are laying a darker blue, and two that are laying very pale eggs.
Now that's a basket of eggs! Very nice!
