Hey hcammack, I need your help. Since you have Ameraucanas I need your help. Pips & Peeps said the my Black Ameraucana looks like an EE. What do you think?

I'm not hcammack, but was wondering if Jean pointed out to you WHY she considers your hen an EE........not doubting her expert opinion, just wondering if she explained why so you'd understand. It's harder to tell with a solid colored chicken, but she has a good eye!

I'm curious to know if you got Midnight from a breeder of Black Ameraucanas or a hatchery, or from another backyard flock owner. She's a pretty girl and looks very sweet.

I replied to your picture yesterday and congratulated you, but it didn't post some how...weird! Anyway, congrats on your new girl!

Maxx-Jean is the Western District Director Ameraucana Breeders Club, and that makes up about a third of the US.
She attends shows and meets and is friends with all the other Ameraucana Breeders, I think the term "expert"
does apply here. She was presenting you with a possibility that it may look like, but not be a pure Ameraucana.
So let's take this opportunity to learn. What should one look for when to add this particular breed?

Does the breeder have color varieties separate? Any breed of different color varieties free ranging is going to give you mixed colors or the possibility
of a cross.
Can the breeder answer you questions about the breed? Anyone who has read this far on the thread knows more than most people.
What is a better quality bird?
Look for full muffs and beards, slate legs, brownish red eyes, red earlobes. Earlobes are easier to tell on Roosters, the females can be pale and hard to tell sometimes.
What you are looking for is white skin. This is why the bottoms of the feet are white and not yellow.
Since the bird in question is black..BBS look for solid colors-no red/brown leaking through blue or black feathers Same with darker feathers
on blue or white wing feathers on black or blue. Peacomb should be medium, not flat and not a crest. All blues are pretty. Most seem to think ideal blue is a medium, lacing a must if you want to show.
They must lay blue eggs. Some varieties and projects are still shell color in progress, but BBS has be developed long enough they should be blue. Do some birds still throw a green egg now and again, yeah, dont breed them.
Will the color breed true? It is nice to know that before putting all that time in to find out. Ameraucanas can take longer to lay.. and arent the best layers sometimes so you are talking 6-9-12m to verify that depending where you live in the US.
At the heart of your question is type, specifically tailset. Yours is 90 degrees and not 45 degrees. Marans have the same issues, but they are in development so it is being bred out. I think looking at birds of the Standard helps to give you an idea, but that isnt easy and people spelling it out can make it clearer.

You can get a group of 50 chicks and raise them all up and only select a small group from which to make a breeder foundation from.
Even birds from Show Quality parents dont yield all show quality chicks, just chicks that have a better chance of meeting the standard.
There are no perfect birds, just an ideal to work towards.

Every question someone asks on BYC helps other people.
No, it isnt a birth defect, its just how she's made.
Either she is pure and your breeder isnt breeding for as "round" as they should be
or something else got in the mix. I would ask them if they pen the Ameraucanas
and that will shed some light on it.
Hey, you got a pretty bird that lays blue eggs so all in all its positive!

My Ameraucana girls are egg squatting and I have seen so much mateing action today its crazy I have also seen two pullets sitting on the nests
