Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I hatched some pure bred Wheaten Ameraucanas March 1st. I should have taken pictures because I sexed them at hatch. I know, but the ones that were pure yellow all turned out to be pullets, and the ones that had some black on their backs all turned out to be cockerels. It was a small sampling, only about a dozen. I put bands on what I thought were the pullets so as to not get them mixed up later as their plumage changed. I have searched and haven't read where this is supposed to be possible. What do you think? Kern

This year's batch of Ameraucanas. It's small, only four chicks, but I don't need many. I just need a backup cockerel and maybe some hens if I get some with nicer backs/fronts than my current birds.

That explains things! Because they definitely didn't match!

Can you sex them.by their stripes at hatch? Like with brown Leghorns?
Not as far as I know. I haven't seen any difference. Then again, it took me four months to notice feather differences between sexes in my Partridge birds, so it's entirely possible that I'm blind. :gig

Well... in brown Leghorns clear three stripes, with a solid stripe through the eye is female. The males the stripes blur into each other, and often look like just 2 stripes. The V on the top isn't as distinct, and the stripe doesn't usually go so clearly through the eye.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I have a couple of little black chicks from a barnyard mix batch of hatching eggs. I was wondering if perhaps they could be Ameracauna or mix thereof, as half of my eggs were blue, and they have dark colored legs (with feathers, though). I don't have great pics, they're kind of skiddish. About 2 weeks old.
