Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

We were just discussing how that we have had some dark blues out of her stock. I've seen your birds and they are great. I have three from you guys and if I didnt think they were wonderful I wouldn't be starting a flock with them. My little black pullet is straight from your mom and has done wonderfully at shows. Keep up the good work!

I need to get a Splash Rooster to rotate with my Pickard roo (Max). I think I can get some lighter blues that way. What does everyone think about this?

I got a light blue with dark lacing from LAM too, but he was beardless...I ended up not keeping any of the chicks I hatched from her this spring and staying with solid Blehm lines...

She lives about ten minutes (probably not that) away and she was the first person to introduce me to Ameraucanas. I have three from her. A pullet from Bob Walchak and a pair from Patty Pickard in that pen. So hopefully they will melt together well and will form my own line of Bantam Blue and Black Ameraucanas. We show together alot. She has some nice big Bantam pullets. Mine are a little on the small side but I think they are doing stellar!

How have you been doing at shows recently Jeanine?

RB, BV, RV on my blacks at the last show, one of my hens actually beat out my cock for BV, I was amazed, especially because I don't particularly like her! LOL I was a little surprised to lose out BB to a wheaten pullet with no noticeable black in her tail, but whatever...

Gonna do one more show this year that I've never been to before, in early December, so I'll keep you posted!

. Its happened to all of us I suppose. I think I'm going to go to one more show. I think its December 5th in Connersville Indiana correct me if I'm wrong. If I become an ABC member in time I think I might think about requesting on last special meet in Indiana but I doubt it....

For showing, I'd stick with the darker, more even blues...like the pic speckledhen posted of Nora, for example...

Well, I only did 2 shows this year so far. (The first one, back in April, my black bantam cock took reserve Ameraucana, BB, BV). There isn't alot of shows around here to choose from, though I am planning on doing more next year, and doing a little more traveling. I really want to get to a Montana show next year too. (And our district is supposed to host the 2013 Ameraucana National! WOO HOO!!)

Did anyone attend the Bluegrass Poultry Association's show this past Saturday? I believe it was the nationals for ameraucanas, just wondering if I might have bumped into any of you there

One question, to show Ameraucanas (like at the nationals for instance) do you have to be a member of a club? I might try showing some of mine next time if I don't need to have a membership, I've got too many breeds to get memberships to all the clubs

I'd guess that splash over black would be a better choice for the darker blues, but I THINK I read somewhere on here that for the best blues you want to do blue x blue...somebody correct me if I'm wrong here...

You can SHOW at a breed national, but you have to have a membership to qualify for the special awards from the breed club sponsoring the national.

Someone told me to get 'good' blues you need a splash roo and blue hens...but that was for OEGB

They said the blues that you get from splash to black breedings are too dark.
