Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

They are supposed to be a fleshy pink or red. How old are they? If they aren't of laying age, give them a bit longer.

That particular flaw is common in some of the lines.

We know that 2 out of the 3 are laying-they are around 9 months old. So what does one do to correct that and is it considered a DQ if showing(my kids are raising them for 4-H projects)

For 4-H, I don't think a judge will even notice it. If you want to continue the line, make sure your cockerel/cock bird has very bright red earlobes. Do not use a "sub par" bird to get rid of the fault.

Okay thanks for the information, we will have to look at the rooster we have and see if he has bright red earlobes. We do have some eggs in the incubator from this group due to hatch Feb 15th.

Breed to standard!

I would agree with Jean and say, of course, you need to breed to the SOP but, having said that, I would also say that once you get your Standard you will notice that it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Since you are just starting out, I would suggest you put a mental picture in your mind (within the Standard of course) of what you want your flock to be. Then go shoot for that.

Jean will tell you, I'm sure, that she can just look at a bird and tell if it came from her lines or maybe even someone elses. That's one great thing about breeding chickens. There is a Standard that sets boundaries as to how far you can go and where some things must be, but it also allows for some individual creatism as well.

And before I go, Ann let me also say that those are some VERY nice looking pullets! Congratulations.

I am really pleased to see that there is some real effort and improvement being done to the variety which I happen to love so much.

God Bless,
