Nikon D200 DSLR w/interchangeable lenses. Sigma 70-300mm lens w/macro setting for that shot. Indoors, white artificial fleece backdrop, in-camera flash. Simple set up, just time consuming and the birds have to cooperate.
 
Here's another taken same time that shows the backdrop better. You just tape it to the wall and let it make a 90 degree angle onto your table or flat surface, like they do at the portrait studios when you take your kids.

I prefer outdoors; this is probably my favorite of all time...he's still a little wet, too--fresh out of the incubator. I think it's cool because both the egg tooth AND the pea comb detail are in focus, which is challenging when you are this close to get the depth of field right. Anyways, enjoy. ETA....Harry Shaffer offspring, btw.
