Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

This seller didn't have photos of her adults. Just photos of her eggs. I'm not going to take a chance. Just put them into the EE pen. I don't want color leakage since it means buyers down the road will get a surprise like I did.

Im definitely no expert. He's attractive for sure. If anything I would say he might be slightly overcolored. I have more experience with Marans than Ameraucanas though. He's a pretty boy though.

The chick; bottom left - yellow with grey-ish strip - what color is that one? I had one of those hatch out of my B/B/S Ameraucana eggs. At 5 weeks, she has turned out sort of like a peach colored Splash. I'm curious how that happens and what she might produce in the future if I were to hatch her eggs. Is she techinically an EE now because she hasn't bred true?

This is her ....

she is a mixed color, your bird. The one in the pic is either a blue mottle or lav mottle, not sure where Clare is with her project....
yours looks like a wheaten/bw crossed with a b/b/s. I have some that are still fuzzy but I can tell by their feathers they will look similar to yours...

For those who are ABC members, there was an article in the last bulletin regarding the Mottled Ameraucana project. My eggs came from one of the two ABC breeders mentioned. There is a black and a blue mottled chick and two black heteros in the initial picture I posted.

This project may be a huge waste of time, since there is a problem getting sufficient pigmentation in the legs to call them slate. It has been stated by Jean that no exception will be made. Seems a bit hard line to me. Similar to the line the APA and ABA are taking against calling Self-Blue birds Lavender. Tradition is in the eye of the beholder. I am of "the more the merrier" opinion. Anything that can draw more positive interest to the breed is great.

I must say, I was very excited by the egg color and size of the eggs I received. Some eggs were much larger than anything my B/B Ameraucanas produce. I should have taken pics prior to setting them, but ah well.

These are from my second hatch.

Thanks, but no credit to me. I wish there was an easy genetic solution to the pigmentation issue. The pictures of the parent stock are to drool for. I love the Mottled pattern. I am currently working with several top notch Cochin breeders to get the Mottled pattern accepted in Large Fowl Cochins. We are looking at a meet in about 3 years. There is no issue with lack of pigmentation there. It makes the legs less swarthy and more yellow which is a good thing in Cochins.

I have to say - I'm finding all this color stuff FASCINATING. Complicated and hard to follow but I'm making progress! Thanks for sharing the pictures of the Mottled birds. Most interesting.

I agree with the hardline comment. I think exceptions should at least be humored. I know other breeds have made exceptions for certain colors because there is not genetic way to make the color with the correct leg color. I am going to be working on crele ameraucana next year(ahem, crele ee's) because I LOVE that pattern/color. I will have it for my own enjoyment even if it won't ever be accepted. I will get them to breed true to every standard except leg color

. I had 1 hetero and 1 homozygous mottled hens last year(coyote got them both same day

) I was going to work on them but redirected for now. I also may have an alternative way, only time will tell....Clare I am going to pm you

Hi stonecottage and
welcome-byc.gif
You are indeed in the right spot, sometimes the conversations move so fast it's hard to get a reply on your post! I am sure someone will comment on your beautiful roo soon - I am not experienced enough either to make any comments on his type.

I have some little cockerels that need to be critiqued too.

Welcome!

I don't show, I just know what I like

. He looks nice to me except I like my combs tighter. I tend to cull the bigger combed boys, I like a nice tight low profile comb, but that is personal preference
