Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

John,
Another point to think about when you contact top breeders asking for quality stock, is that is that they spend $1000's of $$$$ and years to improve their stock for shows. They may be reluctant to hand over (for a minute fraction of what they cost them), their very best birds or eggs to a total stranger.

Most are happy to share some birds/eggs with people they feel are in it for the betterment of the breed or for true joy of owning beautiful birds, but may be wary of total strangers. There are folk who want jump on the latest bandwagon to make quick cash from others work.

I would suggest joining the relevant clubs and get to know who is who, and let them get to know you. That would show commitment

Phage, that is really a great point. I can certainly understand why someone who has invested so much in developing their lines would be wary of strangers. I have always believed that it is fair to pay your dues and will work towards gaining some credibility going forward. I am planning on joining the ABC for 2013 and hope to get to at least one show this year. Maybe I'll get a chance to meet some of the people I read about here!

Kind regards,

John

Hi everyone!
hope you don't ;mind the intrusion. I live in northern WI with a small flock of older rescued ladies (2 BS, 1 Aussie cross ~these are all that survived~and a "best guess" pullet). Anyway, I am thinking of adding Ameraucanas and possibly eventually being only these so I want to make sure I start out with "honest" stock. My question for you folks is first, does anyone know of a reliable breeder in my neck of the woods? And, I am thinking these girls would be cold hardy, are they? Ok, one last question. Since my girls are strictly "eggs and entertainment" how good layers are they?

Thanks to all you knowledgeable folks in advance for all your help.

There are several listed at the Ameraucana Club Breeder's Directory: http://www.ameraucana.org/BreedersDirectory.htm
That's a good place to start. As far as laying, if you really want layers leghorns or sex-links are tops. You'll get 5-6 large or jumbo white or brown eggs per week per hen. Ameraucanas lay medium blue eggs, anyone can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong but mine lay about 3-4 per week. If you just want them for eggs alone not the best choice. BUT if you want colorful eggs, a pretty chicken, and friendly temperment you can't beat Ameraucanas or Easter Eggers, either one.
