Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I am looking for help from the experts on this forum.

I am a high school teacher and I use rare chicken breeds and egg colors to teach sustainability & genetics. We research different egg colors and breeding for various egg colors. We are going to be hatching some olive eggers, partridge penedesenca, FBC marans, tufted rumpless araucanas and various other breeds soon in the classroom.

Has anyone tried a cross between two blue egg laying breeds (Ameraucana with Cream Legbar) or even a cross between a blue egg layer with a green egg layer (Isbar). I am just curious if this would produce a brighter blue egg layer or even a brighter turquoise colored egg. Anyone tried this or have opinions/predictions or a hypotheses? I know about the basics of egg color genetics and makeup. Responding with a comment like "a green egg is really a blue egg with brown coating....." is not going to help. We figured that out at the very beginning of our research.

My students goal is to raise chickens that will produce 12 different egg colors. A rainbow dozen. We have a lot of the obvious breeds. The students are bringing up great questions about cross breeding for egg color. The OE was an experiment...there has to be more out there.

What a wonderful project.As one of the breeders that helped get the breed into the standard I may be able to help.Having tinkered with egg color for 40 plus years and still learning.The best blue egg colors come from eggs that have a very small amount of brown.The tinted eggs that are not white and not really brown when combined with sky blue eggs create a bluer egg that most people do not see as green.I will add a pic of a project.This is a first egg laid by a pullet.The cross wyandote over ameraucana.

I am not an expert, but I can tell you that when I crossed my buff Ameraucana hen that lays a green egg with a wheaten Ameraucana rooster that hatched from a blue egg, the offspring lay a beautiful deep turquoise (blue green) egg.

Ok- very, very interesting. I could see how the little bit of value from the light tint could strengthen the blue tones. Like shading. Thanks for sharing! Love to see pictures (proof is in the pudding) haha.

I have a few chicks right now that I hatched. All were from a blue AM [who was sexed a girl!] cockerel. [His AM sisters BTW, lay a nice blue egg, no green tones, but medium in depth of color.]
One hen was a barred rock and one an australorp, both lay light light brown to more pink-colored eggs.
The third hen was a silkie and she lays a cream-colored egg [not white but I don't see any brown tones at all]. Really an antique or cream color.


What do you think, or guess, might be the coloring of these EE chicks' eggs??? [Guessing for fun and learning, I know!]

Any brown tones with sky blue results in a better blue.From turquoise to greenish.Too much brown and you get olive.

OKay just to verify so im not getting comfused here there is a big difference in an easter egger and a true ameraucana right? Here is what i thought just need someone to tell me because im not for sure anymore, but a true ameraucana only lays blue eggs not any other colors? And people get what they call an easter egger by crossing a true ameraucana on any random brown egg laying chicken to get an easter egger of a rainbow egg layer that lays many different colors of eggs. I need help im do comfused?

What it is is that I have my true splash ameraucana in with my newhampshire red hens what will they make? Im trying to get my ameraucanas their own pen but dont have room right now so i just have them in with my laying hens, but ive had a lot of people around here wanting easter egger chicks so im trying to figure it out.

Your Ameraucana crossed with a New Hampshire red will create Easter Eggers who lay green eggs.
